During the time of the barbarians, the pope was one of the few civilized leaders in Europe. The pope kept an army to protect the Roman people from attack. In fact, all of western Europe looked to the pope for leadership. 5. Briefly describe the Schism of 1054. The tensions between Christians in the East and Christians in the West were rooted primarily in politics: The pope named Charlemagne emperor of the Romans when the title was already claimed by the Eastern emperor in Constantinople.
