The evangelization of Europe was due mostly to the monks. The Muslims of Arabia were followers of Muhammad. The Visigoths, Huns and Ostrogoths were barbarian tribes. “Work and prayer” was the motto of the Benedictine monasteries. In less than a century the Muslims conquered most of Spain. The word monastic means ‘living alone, away from the world’. Saint Augustine helped convert the Anglo-Saxons. Saint Boniface evangelized the peoples of Germany. To survive the barbarian invasions the Church evangelized and converted the barbarians. The Schism of 1054 split the Western from the Eastern churches.
