MSU 339 Course Syllabus, SAMPLE Career Center | 428 University Blvd | Morehead, KY 40351 | Across from Baird Music Hall 606.783.2233 | fax 606.783.9188 | www.moreheadstate.edu/career/ General Information Assignments are intended to prepare you for a professional job interview in which you can discuss projects, skills, and accomplishments that you have obtained from your internship/job experiences. All assignments are REQUIRED. Failure to meet the minimum clock hour requirements, as determined in the learning contract you signed with the employer, means an automatic failure of the class, even if all other assignments are completed. Your internship begins when the semester begins, unless other arrangements have been approved by the employer and the MSU Career Services internship coordinator. A set schedule of work hours should be established the first week of your internship with the employer; the employer may adjust these periodically, depending when they need the intern to work. MSU Career Services does NOT need to approve this schedule. Verify with the employer if you will need to work on MSU break days (such as fall or spring break), and other holidays. Sometimes internship hours do not match academic calendar dates, if this is true for your internship, please contact the MSU Career Services internship coordinator ASAP to negotiate new deadlines for your assignments. Adjustments to due dates for assignments can be made for the convenience of the employer, not the intern. If you are having trouble with your internship, do not drop/withdraw without contacting the instructor. Mediation with your supervisor may be an option or possibly continuing hours on another site/project. This class will be treated like a professional job—meaning you are expected to keep up with your assignments and if there is an issue with submitting assignments (i.e. illness, family emergency, catastrophic weather), you must communicate with the instructor promptly. All written assignments, except the evaluation by your site supervisor (which can be emailed or faxed to your MSU 339 instructor), must be submitted via MSU Blackboard. It is the student’s responsibility to verify that submissions were received by the instructor, prior to finals week. Ten points will be deducted for assignments turned in late, unless a valid excuse is provide to the instructor. The instructor decides what excuses are valid and which are not. LinkedIn has many fields; at minimum, complete these fields: Name Background Summary Experience (include your internship)* Education Skills and Expertise 3. Reflective Journal – 100 points This is an academic paper and should be typed and include proper grammar and sentence structure. The purpose of this paper is to have you learn to describe your projects and experience in a professional manner. This will give you time to improve discussing your skills and accomplishments before doing your “mock” interview and real interviews with employers. It can be written in first person narrative as it is your view of your internship. Your employer will not read this journal. Only the faculty instructor will read the journal. It should be long enough to give detail of projects (i.e. 60 hours on the job would probably warrant a three page paper). The reflective journal should be a typed submission of projects that they are involved in, skills that they are learning, have learned or used, culture and interpersonal professional interactions with their co-workers, accomplishments and struggles that they have had to overcome or what they have learned from a struggle on the job site. Length of journal depends on credit hours (hours on the job). Here are some sample items that should be included: 1. Job responsibilities that have been assigned. Give details AND examples of you doing these assignments. 2. Skills that you have learned or utilized in a new way; include interpersonal skills and customer service skills 3. Projects that you are working on or planning 4. Accomplishments such as problem solving, taking initiative to create systems, or over-coming obstacles. Give examples of you doing these things. 5. Personal thoughts and concerns…..If the student is having a problem, don’t wait. Contact the internship coordinator at MSU Career Services and ask for advice or mediation with the supervisor, 783-9047 6. The student should reflect on a project that they’ve been working on and how they would handle it differently if given a similar project in the future 7. Summarize the experience so far. Did you like working for this employer? Would you like to work for that employer after you graduate? Why or why not? 8. Use the STAR method to give examples of what you are doing in your internship. Tell about a Situation you were in, the Tasks you had to do, the Actions you took and the Results of your actions. 4. Resume – 100 points The purpose of this assignment is to create a resume that you would submit to an employer. As such, it must look professional and include your internship experience. Your resume should be concise and focused on skills and accomplishments. It should probably be no longer than one page. Examples of resumes can be found at: http://www.moreheadstate.edu/career/resumes/. Follow the provided guidelines closely as they are the rubric for grading. DO NOT have others write your resume for you or use a template. PLEASE UNDERSTAND: This will be scrutinized very closely. Expectations are very high for this assignment. The reason for this is an employer scrutinize your resume the same way. Unlike with a real job, however, you may be allowed to resubmit it after the first due date in order to improve it (if needed). 5.
