Mary Trumm Unit 1: Verbs I. Goals: Students will be able to understand what verbs are and where they belong in a sentence. They will be able to differentiate between nouns and verbs. This will give a proper foundation for the students for these objectives: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1.C Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences (e.g., He hops; We hop). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1.E Use verbs to convey a sense of past, present, and future (e.g., Yesterday I walked home; Today I walk home; Tomorrow I will walk home). II. Specific ways to integrate subjects to curriculum: Teach them the basics of what verbs are. Play games so that they enjoy learning about verbs and assess whether they understand the difference from nouns by asking them questions, watching them during games, and checking worksheets. Concept to be taught: Basic Verbs II. Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to make the transition into knowing that verbs are action words. III. Materials needed: Verb Rap youtube video, verb flashcards, verb worksheet IV. Classroom teaching strategies and procedures: A. Anticipatory Set: Remind them what nouns are, explain what verbs are. Show verb rap video. B. Student Learning Activities: Students sing along to verb rap, then act out verbs as I show them the verb flashcards. C. Conclusion: Have them complete verbs coloring worksheet. D. Activity Extension: Not needed. Class works together. V. Evaluation A. How will student learning be measured: Informally; listen to class during class work to see if they know what words to color in on worksheet. B. Re-teaching procedure if necessary: Talk to them about verbs and explain them again. Lesson 2: Verbs in a Sentence I. Concept to be taught: Verbs in a Sentence II. Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to find verbs in a given sentence. III. Materials needed: Youtube Verbs Rap, ABCya.com Icecream game IV. Classroom teaching strategies and procedures: A. Anticipatory Set: Youtube Verb Rap Video B. Student Learning Activities: Students sing along with verbs rap. Students take turn trying to find verbs in a sentence on smartboard. C. Conclusion: Icecream game as a class. D. Activity Extension: Not needed. Class works together. V. Evaluation A. How will student learning be measured: Watch students as they play ABCya game. B. Re-teaching procedure if necessary: Explain why certain words in a sentence are verbs. Lesson 3: Verbs Vs. Nouns in a sentence I. Concept to be taught: Verbs vs Nouns II. Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to understand the difference between verbs and nouns and differentiate them in a sentence. III. Materials needed: Verb Rap youtube video, smartboard. IV. Classroom teaching strategies and procedures: A. Anticipatory Set: Verb Rap B. Student Learning Activities: Students help me come up with the predicates of a sentence on a board. Write a noun and choose students to come up with an agreeing verb. C. Conclusion: Finish sentences with class on board. D. Activity Extension: Not needed. Class works together. V. Evaluation A. How will student learning be measured: Informally; watch and listen as class makes sentences. B. Re-teaching procedure if necessary: Remind them by explaining the difference between nouns and verbs. Lesson 4:Verbs as Action Words I. Concept to be taught: Verbs are action words II. Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to review and understand that verbs are action words. III. Materials needed: Verb Rap youtube video, verb flashcards. IV. Classroom teaching strategies and procedures: A. Anticipatory Set: Verb Rap B. Student Learning Activities: Charades. Students take turns acting out a verb and the class tries to figure out the word. C. Conclusion: Remind them that verbs are action words. D. Activity Extension: Not needed. Class works together. V. Evaluation A. How will student learning be measured: Informally; listen to class. Lesson 5: Verbs Review I. Concept to be taught: Verbs Review in a Sentence and as Action Words II. Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to review and understand that verbs are action words and will be able to point them out in a story and/or a sentence. III. Materials needed: Verb Rap youtube video, Pete the Cat book, verb flashcards. IV. Classroom teaching strategies and procedures: A. Anticipatory Set: Verb Rap B. Student Learning Activities: Act out verb flashcards as a class. Read Pete the Cat story to them and have them point out verbs in the story. C. Activity Extension: Not needed. Class works together.
