Discuss personal beliefs, values, feelings, and assumptions when explaining their own perspectives on artwork and connect their responses to what they see in their work. 1C 4. List sources of visual culture in society (TV, museums, malls, internet, theaters) 1D 6. Create a visual product that reflects current, cultural influences. Essential Questions: What is surrealism? How do you collage? How does a grid drawing work? How do you use watercolors properly? Content: Surrealism Gridding Watercolor painting Objectives: 1. Students will learn about surrealism and how to create a surreal image using collage 2. Students will learn about the grid method to drawing 3. Students will use and understand vocabulary as well as techniques when using watercolors. Vocabulary : Surrealism: Dream like paintings that look real but are obviously thinks that couldn’t happen such as Dali’s melting clocks. Watercolor: a painting medium based on a transparent wash system of painting which uses the white of the support, paper, as highlights. Sometimes opaque paint is appled for accents; however, the essence of watercolor is transparency. Cold Press: paper which is passed through a cold press druing the drying process. A medium surface, slight tooth. Tint: the addition of white shade: the addition of black resist: preserving the white of the paper or lightly tinted areas by adding a material which protects the paper from further development during the painting process. rubber cement, liquid Frisket, alcohol, salt. Dry brush: created by painting with a brush with is damp with color. hard/fuzzy edges & lines created by brush hairs. Wet on wet: The application of wet paint to a wet surface. the result is soft fuzzy edges and bleeding color Wet on dry: a wet paint loaded brush applied to a dry surface. the end result is hard crisp controlled edges and forms clearly defined. Lesson Plan/ Activity/ strategies: Instructional Strategies/Activities: Students will be looking at surrealism and using the collage technique to create a surreal image. They will do this on 4x6 paper. Student will then begin learning about grid drawings and hoe the grid method works. They will be use 12x18 paper and will be gridding up from one inch squares on their collage to 3 inch squares on their drawing paper. Once they have completed their drawing and erased the grid lines students will begin to paint their images. Accommodations/Differentiation: Visual Learners: Demonstrations will be presented to students for all work that is to be done. Visual examples of good work and bad work will be shown to students. Key parts of lesson will be written or drawn on board, and remain there for the duration of the lesson. Oral Listeners: All directions will be told to students with repetition of key parts by students recited back to me. I will observe all students for other problems that may need assistance. Assessment: This Project will be a total of 200 pts. 50 pts – Collage 50 pts – grid drawing 10 pts – Clean up and care of materials 10 pts – Participation 50 pts – use of watercolor techniques 30 pts – Craftsmanship
