LIAISON STATEMENT TO ICAO
Protection of radio altimeters following implementation of WAIC systems
in the frequency band 4 200-4 400 MHz
ITU-R Working Party 5B (WP 5B) thanks ICAO for its support of the efforts under WRC-15
agenda item 1.17 and for the information in the liaison statement (Doc. 5B/681) providing
clarification on the issue of the protection of radio altimeters following the implementation of
WAIC systems in the frequency band 4 200-4 400 MHz.
WP 5B notes that ICAO is of the view that the characteristics of all relevant radio altimeters operated in
the field today are described in Recommendation ITU-R M.2059 “Operational and technical
characteristics and protection criteria of radio altimeters utilizing the band 4 200-4 400 MHz” and that
ICAO will consider these characteristics in developing Standards And Recommended Practices (SARPs)
for WAIC systems.
WP 5B is pleased to inform ICAO that ITU-R studies on this issue are contained in the new Report ITUR M.2319 (Doc. 5/171(Rev.1)). WP 5B invites ICAO to consider this Report in the process of developing
the above mentioned SARPs for WAIC systems.
WP 5B welcomes any future cooperation with ICAO on this issue.
