SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY DRAFT DIVERSITY PLAN
June 4, 2013
Diversity Goal 1: Recruit, retain, advance, recognize, and promote a diverse faculty, staff and
administration while creating a campus-wide community that celebrates its own diversity as one of its
strengths and as a means of shaping Mason’s identity as a university.
Current Status:
1.1 School/Department Goal or Implementation Strategy for Diversity Goal 1
Recruit and retain a diverse faculty and staff.
Performance Indicators for this Goal/Strategy
Tasks
1.1A Establish search committees using diversity as a major criterion.
1.1B Create a diversity checklist with items for search committee chair to consider in composing position
description and advertising.
1.1C Write position announcement to include language describing GMU and SPP’s commitment to diversity.
1.1D Develop advertising strategy that targets diverse populations. This should include directly contacting offices
and individuals at, for example, HBCUs, minority professional associations and discussion groups.

1.1A Dean, Senior Associate Dean, with input from Management Committee and designated search committee
chair.
1.1B Senior Associate Dean, Director of Fiscal Services & HR, and Search Committee Chair, with input from
others.

1.1D Members of search committee, Director of Fiscal Services & HR, Administrator for HR.
Timeline for Completion (within plan period)
1.1A By the start of the hiring cycle (fall 2013), the diversity checklist should be available for the search
committee(s) to discharge their duties as enumerated above.
Report of Accomplishments: The three faculty persons hired from 2010-2013 include one white female,
one African-American female, and one male of either Hispanic or Latino origin. Staff members hired
during the same timeframe have considerably increased the diversity of SPP staff.
Diversity Goal 2: Recruitment, academic achievement, persistence and graduation of a diverse student
body.

Demographic make-up of student body; demographic make-up of students gradually improved.

2.1A – Program directors and admissions staff develop recruiting plans / strategies for Dean, Senior Associate
Dean, and Management Committee.
2.1B – Program directors and admissions staff outline plans for monitoring students’ progress with provisions for
corrective actions when necessary.
