BIOCERAMICS AND CELLS FOR REINFORCEMENT OF BONE SYMPOSIUM October 19 – 20, 2012 Riga, Latvia Dear friends and colleagues! We are delighted to invite you to take part in symposium which will be held to share, to reflect and to learn from each other new trends in biomaterial science, bone tissue engineering, experimental and clinical work devoted to possibilities to replace autologous and other bone grafts by bioceramic scaffolds loaded with different cells including stem cells. In Riga we have long-time cooperation between Riga Biomaterial Innovation and Development Center of RTU and Riga Stradins University in technologies for development of new biomaterials for substitution of bone tissue lost in diseases, injuries and after surgery, investigation of these materials in animal experiments and in clinical use mainly in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Main topics for discussion: 1. Composition and structure of bioceramics for reinforcement of bone; 2. Selection of tissue and cells for enrichment of bone substitutes; 3. Functional morphology of reactogenicity of bioceramics saturated with cells; 4. Clinical application of bioceramics and cells in pathology of bone. Riga, the capital of Latvia, was officially founded in 1201. Riga is located along the Baltic Sea at the southern coast of the Gulf of Riga, on the Rigava coastal plain. In the architecture of the historic centre of Riga examples of all architectural styles characteristic for the Northern Europe, from Gothic to Modernism, are found. The historic centre of Riga is included in the list of sites protected by UNESCO. Riga today is a dynamic and pulsating city. Residents of Riga almost incessantly organize events, participate in them and discuss them. The thing is to learn beforehand WHERE and WHAT is happening. Why is it happening and was it worth it – these are the questions the residents and visitors of Riga are determined to find out for themselves also in this occasion. Welcome to Riga, Latvia in October 19-20, 2012! Sincerely yours, Iveta Ozolanta Professor, Riga Stradins University, Prorector for Science; Liga Berzina – Cimdina Professor, Riga Technical University, Director, Riga Biomaterial Innovation and Development Center of RTU Accommodation, meals and coffee breaks will be covered by organizers supported by EU structural funds.
