<Photo News> Business Power-Saving Management Briefing Session The industrial world has agreed to make an effort to implement electricitysaving management in order to coincide with the date August 13th which is the starting period of this year’s expected peak week of electricity consumption. On the 13th, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, along with major enterprises such as Samsung Electronics, Posco, SK Innovation Co., LTD, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Steel, LG Electronics held the ‘Electricity Saving Management Briefing Session’ at the Suwon factory of Samsung ElectroMechanics. The business community stated that “businesses are going to enhance their level of work concentration during the summer season by adjusting vacation schedules and wearing lighter clothes during the peak period of electricity use” and said that “they will do everything they can to save electricity in the office and factories through efforts such as operating independent power plants to secure power.” Minister of Knowledge Economy, Hong, Suk-woo said that he “wishes today’s event to become the start to spread the culture of electricity-saving management to all industries” and also said that “the voluntary powersaving management of the industrial world will greatly help overcome the peak period of electricity consumption and establish the citizen power plant.” Executive vice-chairman of the KCCI, Lee, Dong-geun requested “the industrial world to actively participate in power-saving activities despite numerous difficulties they are going through in the hot weather, it decreases the burden of production cost and benefits the national economy.” Park, Tae-jin, chief of Institute for Sustainable Development of the KCCI reported recent activities since the launching of Business Community Energy Saving Campaign Headquarters (chief: Lee, Dong-geun executive vice-chairman of the KCCI,) on November 30th, 2011. The institute established ‘50 powersaving acts for the industrial world’ and has promoted voluntary powersaving campaign. He also stated that the institute “will make an effort to enhance the power-saving activities of the industrial community through continuous electricity-saving campaigns during the peak period of electricity consumption.” At the event, businesses’ know-hows of electricity-saving management to prevent the electricity crisis were shared. Samsung Electro-Mechanics presented its experience and stated that their “goal is to save 30billion won for energy expenses this year by establishing a energy management system” and showed that they are “implementing goals of daily electricity usage and analyzing priorities to save energy for each work-site and department.” Samsung Electro-Mechanics also said they are “planning to practice nearly 100 power-saving activities such as insulation of thermal equipment by organizing a team exclusively dealing with power-saving activities at the Busan, Sejong, and Suwon factories.” They also stated that they are “expecting annual cost-savings to be near 6.8billion won through these activities.” LG Electronics also said that they are “managing the amount of energy used by installing highly effective heating and cooling systems, refrigerating show cases, and LED lights to increase the efficiency of heating and cooling, cold storage, and lighting that consumes about 68% of the energy used in convenient stores.”They also stated that “with these efforts, about 185MW of electricity is being saved, which is one third of the capacity of the 587MW of Kori Nuclear Power Plant station based on the peak hour of electricity usage at three in the afternoon. Hyundai Steel also said that they are “trying hard to accomplish the reduction of energy usage in factories by increasing the scale of investment for energy saving facilities every year and actively participating in the electricity demand management system.”They also stated that they will “take the lead in saving energy used by houses through housing energy efficiency projects that repair houses of low income families.” At this event, 15 business and association officials were present including Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Posco, SK Innovation, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, Hyundai Steel, LG Electronics, SK Hynix Inc, Woongjin Holdings, Hanhwa Chemical Corporation, OCI, S-OIL, Honam Petro Chemical Corporation, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co., LTD, Hyosung, Korea Association of Machinery Industry, and Korea Electronics Association.
