PURVAAI TEXTILE DESIGN
COMPETITION 2013
Purvaai, which means ‘Winds from the East’, is a venture whose goal is to explore
and reflect the diversity of ancient art and craft and its varied influences on modern
home décor.
Its unique products largely use locally sourced natural fabrics, handcrafted textiles
and traditional embroidery techniques. The exquisite art-like designs resonate with
its philosophy of Contemporary Tradition.
Having received accolades for their ideology, Purvaai last year launched a textile
design competition for the current students and recent graduates of UK design
schools.
The competition last year was very well received with a number of entries from
students and recent graduates of well-known design programmes of UK universities.
The winning entries were put into production, with the winners being given due credit
in all our communication.
This year, Purvaai once again presents a Textile Design Competition for design
students and recent graduates.

(no restrictions on size or shape of the cushions in the range)
2. Cushions and Throw set- Must include at least two unique cushion designs
and one throw design
3. Cushions and curtain set- Should include at least two unique cushion designs
and one curtain design.
4. Personal accessories range- Choose from either stoles or scarves and come

‘Emerald Green’ is Pantone’s colour of 2013. Green reflects nature and nature
reflects diversity. Nature knows no boundaries; there can be a microcosm in a dew
drop and there is a universe in our seas. A garden with its flowers, beetles, birds and
trees belongs to tended nature, whereas the forests that are teeming with amazing
flora and fauna showcase the wild, untamed side of nature. Marine life is vivid with
colours and textures of corals, fish, plants and other aquamarine life. The molten
lava settled as beautifully coloured igneous rocks, giving us precious and semiprecious stones are all part of this wonderful element of nature.
Apart from providing us with immense inspiration, nature has also provided us with
fabulous fibres such as linen, cotton, silk, wool and natural dyes like madder and
indigo to with which to colour them.
In keeping with need of the hour and believing in ethical and sustainable fashion,
Purvaai invites talented young designers to create a fresh new range based on the
theme ‘NATURALLY YOURS’.
Designers are being offered the chance to take their pick from colours, textures,
patterns and forms that nature has to offer and to design a range of soft furnishings /
personal accessories. This is an opportunity for them to present their take on the
theme by unleashing their own natural powers of creativity.
Purvaai Textile Design Competition 2013
THE THEME:
4
Designers are welcome to interpret this theme in their own special way through any
or all of the following:
1. There is perhaps no better way to reflect the inherent beauty of natural fibres
and textiles than through Surface Manipulations. Fabrics could be low key
but the challenge is to bring out the emotional side of textiles as well as the
technical possibilities and aesthetics.
2. Designing of Print(s) (including running prints or graphics), where the motifs
and colour schemes are inspired by nature- Flora, fauna, gems, minerals etc.
3. Embellishment and embroidery in natural motifs or using natural materialswood, metal, wool- to achieve a 3-D effect.
4. The use of Natural Dyes
IMP: Designers must include a concept note of about 150 words suggesting fabric
choices. You may also send in detailed inspirational pictures and notes, if you so
desire with each design, however this is not mandatory.
The designs should be absolutely original in composition. The colour palette should
be relevant to the theme, and ideally each range should use the same colour palette
or complimentary colours.
