Industrial Training School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Why do you need to do Industrial Training? All students doing a Bachelor of Engineering or a Master of Engineering by coursework are required to complete Industrial Training (IT) as part of their degrees. This requirement comes from the Engineers Australia criteria for accrediting professional engineering education programs which “strongly advocates that all engineering schools include a minimum of 60 days of” “first-hand experience in an engineering-practice environment, outside the educational institution.” All UNSW Engineering students must undertake 60 days of Industrial Training working in an engineering company, usually during summer recesses at the end of their second and third years. It is allowed to add shorter periods of training with the same or different employers to reach the required number of days. Assessment Assessment Certification from supervisor/employer of number of days of engineering practice A report by the student demonstrating the nature of the practical experience undertaken and a description of the engineering environment. Procedure for PAID Industrial Training The steps for completing IT are described in detail below: Note that you can complete IT at various places, but each time you have finished at one place of employment, you must follow the below steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. Log into Moodle via http://moodle.telt.unsw.edu.au Click on ‘site home’ and search ‘ITCVEN’ Click on Industrial Training for Civil and Environmental Engineering Self -enrol as a student. Self-enrolment key is: CVENITSX201XStudent! (Include the !) The ‘X’ refers to the semester and year that you enrol in. e.g. If you are enrolling to lodge days for IT in semester 1 2015, it should look like this: CVENITS12015Student! 5. You will need to watch the Safety video first before you can lodge any requests for IT 6. Once complete, click on Information section where you will find the approval form for IT that needs to be complete and lodged in the ‘assessment section’ 7. Once your place of employment has been approved you will be able to lodge days of your Industrial Training 8. To lodge days, please do so in the assessment section 9. Employer will receive this report and will confirm your days 1 10. Repeat steps 5-7 until you have been approved for 60 days of IT 11. Once you have completed a minimum of 60 days, you will also be able to submit your report online via the assessment section. Information on how to write your report can be found in Moodle. Coordinator of Industrial Training To contact the Coordinator of Industrial Training, please email Dr Kostas Senetakis at k.senetakis@unsw.edu.au. Alternatively you can contact the School office at cven.enquiries@unsw.edu.au or via phone on 9385 5033 Unpaid Industrial training: The Faculty of Engineering strongly does not recommend unpaid industrial training (IT), however, recognises that in some extenuating circumstances, students may not be able to obtain paid IT. If a student wishes to pursue unpaid IT, importantly this has to be around new learning, thus the student wanting to undertake a placement in a workplace needs to be able to demonstrate that they are in a role that will allow them to achieve the learning objectives of industrial training through engagement with new learning. If the student has exhausted every avenue recommended in the Industrial Training Guideline, then the below procedure should be applied. Students must only conduct IT that provides a learning experience, and NOT work that simply assists with the ordinary operation of the business or organisation. For further information, refer to the Fair Work Ombudsman. Procedure for unpaid Industrial training: 1. Student will obtain a written statement and job description from the proposed company outlining tasks they will be undertaking. This should be on a company letter head, signed by the responsible workplace supervisor/industrial training contact. 2. Student will fill in the Learning Outcomes for Unpaid IT form which requests student and supervisor to work out the learning objectives of the placement, the agreed learning support and agreed feedback process. This will be signed by the student and supervisor. 3. Student and workplace supervisor will fill in the Engineering Risk Management Form and sign. 4. Student will submit the 3 documents to the School's Industrial Training Coordinator for review and signature. Once the School's Industrial Training Coordinator have signed the 3 documents, it is the student's responsibility to obtain the signature of the Associate Dean (Education), followed by the signature of the Risk Advisory and Internal Audit Unit by submitted the forms to them via email. 5. Student will select the relevant UNSW insurance service they require and submit electronically with the Job description, Risk Assessment and Learning Outcomes forms to the Risk Advisory and Internal Audit Unit. 6. Student will upload all signed documents into Moodle to confirm placement's commencement; unless in Moodle, the placement will not be considered registered.
