John D. Shaw Elementary School “A Community of Learners” Thursday, 10, 2013 Word of the Week The word of the week this week has been justice, treating all people fairly, even those we do not know. The word of the week next week will be trust. A skill associated with trust and trustworthiness is having confidence that the right thing will happen without trying to control it or make it happen. January Activities Permission Slips There are several before and after school activities that are starting this month. Students must have a signed permission slip to be able to participate. Forms are available at the front office. Be sure to look for 4th quarter activity information prior to spring break; we will be offering Signing Sundogs, Track, and Jump Rope. Volleyball: January 14th through March 1st Monday & Thursday from 8:15am – 9:00am Grades 3 - 5 Chess Club: January 24th-April’s District Tournament (4/20) Thursday from 3:45pm – 4:45pm Grades 4 & 5 News From District Office: Parents, As a requirement of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, states and school districts must issue annual report cards to parents. The purpose of the report card is to provide parents with information about the district and their child’s school in terms of teacher qualifications, academic achievement, and school/district accountability. To access the report cards, follow these steps: 1. Visit our district web site at www.matsuk12.us 2. On the left side, scroll down below site shortcuts and announcements to “Federal Programs” and click on the “No Child Left Behind (NCLB) & Title I” link. 3. From there, you can view the District Report Card to the Public or look up your school name under Fiscal Year FY12. If you would like a written copy of your school’s report card, please contact Kirstin Hills at 746-9228. BP Teacher of Excellence Nominations Due Feb. 15th BP’s Teacher of Excellence program invites parents to nominate their child’s teacher for this award. A nominee should be a teacher who effectively imparts ideas and information and who animates students’ curiosity and love of learning. I have found that the nomination alone sends a powerful message of recognition for our teacher’s efforts with your children. Forms are available in our office or at http://www.bpteachers.com/. Forms are due February 15. I am proud of so many of our teachers who deserve recognition. Please consider nominating your child’s teacher! New Traffic Pattern Thank you so much to all of our families for yielding to all buses entering and leaving Shaw. We appreciate your support as we adjust to the new traffic patterns and the winter conditions. Lost and Found Our lost and found coat rack is filled with coats, snow pants, and many gloves. It is in the front office foyer as you enter the building. We hope our new format is easier to find lost or missing items.
