STANDING COMMITTEE APPLICATION

This application is to be used if you are seeking to apply as a student representative to the
University’s Administration various standing committees: Academic Standards, Admissions and
Scholarship, Curriculum, Educational Policy, and Education Abroad. All rights and decisions of
appointments are reserved to College Council under its Constitution and Bylaws.

DESCRIPTION OF COMMITTEES
Committee on Academic Standards - The Committee on Academic Standards (CAS) is a
College-wide body composed of student representatives and faculty from each division of the
College. The purpose of the Committee is to uphold the academic standards of the College. If
exceptions to academic rules and regulations are to be made, this body will adjudicate the case.
Generally the Committee meets to hear student appeals four times during the fall semester. The
same holds true for the spring semester.
Admissions and Scholarships Committee – This Committee shall study and recommend to the
faculty policies and standards for admission of students to Emory College; for award of College
scholarship funds insofar as University Scholarship policies do not apply; and shall maintain
liaison with University admissions officers in the carrying out of College admissions policies.
Generally the Committee meets three times during the fall semester. The same holds true for the
spring semester.
Curriculum Committee – This committee shall study and make recommendations to the faculty
concerning the curriculum of Emory College. It also gives final approval to the addition, deletion
and alteration of courses not affecting uniform requirements and approves concentration
programs as submitted by departments and divisions. Generally the Committee meets three times
during the fall semester. The same holds true for the spring semester.
Educational Policy Committee - The Educational Policy Committee (EPC) reviews courses
submitted by academic departments for approval into the General Education Requirements
(GERs). This committee recommends a list of approved General Education Requirements for the
College. Generally the Committee meets three times during the fall semester. The same holds true
for the spring semester.
Education Abroad Committee - This Committee shall study and recommend to the faculty
policies and standards for the creation, deletion and periodic review of College-sponsored
programs abroad and their integration into the curriculum of the College. It advises CIPA on
academic policies concerning study abroad and scholarships for study abroad. The committee
gives final approval to the creation, change, or deletion of College academic programs abroad and
approves policies for the transfer of credit for courses completed abroad that are not equivalent to
courses taught on campus, and it approves the addition, change, or deletion, of courses
exclusively offered abroad. It gives final approval to requests/appeals to existing Study Abroad
policies. Generally the Committee meets three times during the fall semester. The same holds true
for the spring semester.
REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY
1.
Applicant must be a full-time enrolled undergraduate student in the University
with a cumulative GPA above a 2.5 without any honor code or discipline
violations. (GPA will not apply to entering Freshman 2017)

for a student representative position.

Since this is a yearly appointment, applicant must be able to attend all monthly
meetings of their respective committees for the academic year. Each committee’s

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
As Student Representative, you agree to follow all guidelines, procedures, and
regulations of your respective committee, fulfilling your responsibilities with the
best interests of the College and Emory student body.
2.
As Student Representative, you must serve as the liaison to the various standing
committees and student body, gathering the views and opinions of a wide range of
students and voicing them to the standing committees.
3.
All Student Representatives and alternates shall attend the Emory Standing
Committee (ESC) meeting with the College Council Vice President monthly to
discuss issues and ideas that can be addressed for the student body.
4.
Attendance at all standing committee meetings are mandatory. However, in cases
of emergencies and uncontrollable circumstances, you must contact the Chair of
your committee in a prompt manner.
5.
Failure to comply with any of the four aforementioned (1-4) points of the ROLES
& RESPONSIBILITIES can lead to negative consequences including removal
from student representative position for the standing committee.

Committee for the Emory Administration is a huge responsibility, and I will represent the
Emory student body and Emory College in the best way as I see fit. Moreover, I will
abide by all University policies, guidelines, and regulations, and I will adhere to the
policies of my respective standing committee, including any confidentially agreements
and sensitive information.
