DIRECTIONS: WEGENER’S FOSSIL EVIDENCE for CONTINENTAL DRIFT MATERIALS: Color Key Handout; Continental Land Mass Handout; Land Mass Outline; scissors; tape; colored pencils PROCEDURE: 1. Label the land masses before you cut them out. You may use any reference material provided. Color the fossil areas to match the Fossil COLOR KEY. 2. Cut out each of the continents along the edge of the continental shelf (the outermost dark line). Alfred Wegener’s evidence for continental drift is shown on the cutouts. Wegener used this evidence to reconstruct the positions of the continents as they existed millions of years ago. 3. Try to logically piece the continents together so they form a giant super continent. 4. When you are satisfied with “the fit” of the continents, discuss the evidence with your lab partners and decide if the evidence supports this arrangement or not. 5. Place your final puzzle pieces in the proper “fit” based on the evidence on the outline provided and tape them in place. 6. Write an explanation of your decision and the reasoning you used based on the evidence. Prepared by: Dr. Debbie Payne, Ruth H. Liddell, Shirley K.
