Little Heath School: Mathematics Mathematics is a thriving department of 13 committed and well qualified mathematicians supported by 3 specialist Teaching Assistants. The management of the department includes cocoordinators of Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form mathematics. Curriculum Organisation Little Heath School caters for the whole range of ability and provides courses for all pupils from those with Special Needs through to those students aspiring to Oxbridge entrance. Pupils are taught in ability sets from their arrival. Clear schemes of work exist at all key stages, supported by a variety of textbooks, worksheet and other resources. Pupils in years 7 and 8 also have time in lessons to complete key mathematical tasks which are designed to help them to improve their thinking skills. Courses at Key Stage 4 lead to Edexcel GCSE examinations for all pupils in the year group. We enter students for the linear exam at Foundation and Higher level. A*- C figures have generally been over 70%s for the last few years. At A level we provide a suite of Mathematics and Further Mathematics options based on the AQA syllabus. These include single and double A level combinations of Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision mathematics. 2014, 97% of A level students scored A – C grades, with 10% at A*. The department also has good links with other schools. There are opportunities to visit local Primary schools where staff teach pupils in year 6, and Little Heath is also the base for the Further Mathematics Support Programme in the area. Facilities The Mathematics Department is housed in its own building, which has eleven specialist rooms, each equipped with an interactive whiteboard, and a departmental workroom. One of the classrooms is equipped with a suite of computers for students to use. Each classroom has a full range of practical equipment. Other facilities include a class set of Activote hand held voting systems. Specialist School Activities As a specialist school in Science and Mathematics, the department strives to be at the “cutting edge” of mathematics teaching and learning. In addition to many of the points above, the department organises a variety of visits and extracurricular learning opportunities and has a strong involvement in delivering cross-curricular days and enrichment events. We are constantly looking at ways of improving the learning opportunities we offer to our students. We are looking for someone to take an active part in this enthusiastic team where the overall mathematical education of the pupils is our priority.
