ePortfolio – induction requirement for VT2 pharmacists and tutors
Throughout VT2 training, the VT pharmacist is expected to build a portfolio demonstrating
their learning and provide evidence that they have achieved the required competencies.
This is an online ePortfolio which allows the VT2 Pharmacist to create action logs, upload
pieces of evidence and request feedback from external trainers. VT pharmacists can access
the online NES resources available which are designed to support them through their first
few years as a hospital pharmacist.
There is a powerpoint presentation containing more details about the ePortfolio.

- For VT2 Pharmacists and tutors
Being a pharmacist requires leadership skills which can be new and even daunting for newly
qualified pharmacist. NES has produced this popular webinar delivered by Richard Ellis Leadership Theory, to help pharmacists develop their leadership skills which are
transferable throughout all sectors of pharmacy. Find this within the Educational resources
section of the website within the list of webinars.

Element 1
Introduction to Leadership
This recording of Wendy Chalmers was developed for a senior pharmacist training day. It
provides useful information about communication.
7
Element 1
Communicating for success
This resource is excellent for newly qualified pharmacists who need a refresher on care
plans. Developed by Arlene Shaw – a specialised pharmacist at Tayside, where she highlights
the important aspects of creating and completing a care plan through examples. Power
point presentation.

Medicines Information is a key component within VT2 and the ability to critically appraise
research papers is vital. NES provides presentations, MCQs and an assessment on Critical
Appraisal skills. These have been split into two parts; the first part discusses the basics of
evidence based medicine and the second provides guidance on how to appraise a research
paper.
9
Element 2
Critical Appraisal
Angela Timoney gives an overview of evidence based practice. Find this within the
Educational resources webinar section.
10
Element 2
Evidence Based Practice – that’s what we do
The topic of infection is one of many important topics covered in the VT2 training and is
commonly managed in practice. NES provide 3 presentations on Health acquired infections
(HAI) and Antimicrobial surveillance which was hosted by the University of Strathclyde.

Mindful Prescribing and Polypharmacy Webinar
Another competency and component within hospital training relates to understanding
medical gases. NES has created a PowerPoint presentation narrated by Lynn Morrison
(Regional QA Pharmacist) which highlights the important issues relating to medical gases, as
well as a MCQ to test your knowledge. The objectives of this presentation are to help the
VT2 Pharmacists: to describe the different medical gases found within hospital, understand
the design and construction of a medical gas pipeline system (MGPS), have awareness of the
system of controls applied to facilitate the safe and secure operation of a MGPS, understand
the roles and responsibilities of key personnel involved in medical gases, understand the
role of a Quality Controller, have awareness of medical gas testing and to appreciate the
role of the EDC pharmacist in an emergency situation.

Writing in Patient’s Clinical Case Notes
There are a variety of clinical governance resources several of which are within this booklet;
Audit, Evidence based practice, Patient safety, Risk management, Writing in clinical case
notes. These are generally available as powerpoint presentations and no longer webinars.

Clinical governance
Element 3
Patient safety
Requirement
for VT2
Pharmacists
Patient safety is fundamental for all healthcare professionals so NES has provided a few
resources to cover this topic. This includes a PowerPoint presentation and a webinar
presented by Alexa Wall (Head of Pharmacy, Monklands) on patient safety. The programme
includes Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA), Run Charts, Failure Modes Effective Analysis (FMEA),
Significant Event Analysis (SEA) and Driver diagrams. In addition, medicine reconciliation and
high risk medicines are discussed.
Furthermore, NES also includes Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) interactive modules which
were developed by NES and Yellow Card Centre Scotland (Centres for Adverse Drug
Reactions to Drugs Scotland). These modules include Basic Principles of ADR, Categorisation,
Drug Allergy Classification, Diagnosis, Interpretation & Management, Avoiding Adverse Drug
Reactions and Pharmacovigilance.
16
The clinical audit is a fundamental component of clinical governance which some practitioners may
find difficult to differentiate with research. The resource (NES Audit page), training and peer review
provided by NES should hopefully provide the necessary tools for any pharmacist to undertake and
complete an audit. The NES Audit page contains forms, samples and useful links.
17
Element 3
Audit
Learning from a significant event is a key aspect of improving patient safety and quality of care. At
NES an innovative approach towards SEA, known as the Enhanced SEA, allows for a more meaningful
experience for practice teams and a more professionally appropriate and effective method of
analysing significant events. Further information about the Enhanced SEA and other resources such
as forms and examples are available via the NES Pharmacy SEA webpage.
18
Element 3
Significant Event Analysis (SEA)
There are 5 modules for this topic.

Element 3
Risk Management
Requirement

Risks are always present so it is important that you have methods and procedures to
minimize these risks and a plan of action when an event occurs. The resources section
contains a presentation delivered by Diane Boys (previously Risk Manager, NES) on risk
management. This presentation focuses on the benefits of risk management and the
approach to take when dealing with an event.
20
Element 5
Clinical trials
This interactive PDF, contains information about the various stages that pharmacists are
involved in when undertaking the management of clinical trial medication.

Element 6
Giving Feedback
Induction
requirement
for tutors
Being a tutor is an important task which requires using different approaches to ensure that
your VT2 Pharmacists is receiving the best training experience. NES in conjunction with The
Pharmacy Training Company (PTC) provide a comprehensive e resource about the
importance of active listening and giving feedback.
22
As well as providing materials for VT2 Pharmacists, NES also provides resources for tutors.
This is ideal for new tutors who may need guidance on supporting their VT2 Pharmacists to
achieve their full potential. NES have acquired a resource from the CPPE called ‘Helping
others learn’.
