Standard Program
Board of Education policy requires each student to select a schedule consisting of a minimum of eight courses for each year of high
school. This includes Physical Education/Health and seven other courses selected from the areas of English, Mathematics, Social
Studies, Science, World Language, Arts, and Vocational Studies (Business Education, Family and Consumer Science, and Industrial
Technology).
All courses have a credit value equal to the number of times the classes meet per week. Most classes meet 5 periods per week, yielding 5
credits. One-semester courses meet for only half the year and yield 2.5 credits. As of 2012-2013, Leonia High School changed to a
rotating block schedule. All laboratory classes are 58 minutes and yield 5 credits. However, prior to 2012-13, science-laboratory courses
carry 6 credits (5 classes + 1 laboratory).
Juniors and Seniors may opt to develop an Individualized Independent Program (J.I.I.P. /S.I.I.P.), which enables students to focus on a
specific subject of interest. A J.I.I.P. /S.I.I.P. may include the following options: internships, college courses, co-curricular activities,
student exchange programs, distance learning opportunities, and/or other structured learning experiences.
Graduation Requirements
Students must satisfactorily complete 130 credits, including:

The Leonia Academy for Science (LAS) was founded in
September 2003 to serve the district’s best students
interested in mathematics and science.
The primary goal of the Academy for Science is to develop
well-rounded young adults who can think critically and
problem solve in today’s society.
The program structure is demanding, requiring students to
arrive at 7:00 am each morning to complete additional
coursework. Students experience four years of rigorous
training, taking honors and Advanced Placement courses in
academic core and required courses in the arts and
sciences.
In addition, students gain understanding of the practical
application of their coursework through a variety of
enrichment activities and field experiences. Students are
required to participate in an externship during their senior
year, which provides hands-on experience in a particular
field of study.
Leonia Academy for the Culinary Arts
Founded in September 2013, the Leonia Academy for the
Culinary Arts (LACA) provides interested students with the
opportunity to learn about the culinary arts and hospitality
management. Students complete all academic core and
required courses in addition to the LACA program of
study, which includes classes in business and culinary arts as
well as an externship.
