Michael Allen, VP of Academic Affairs, Los Angeles Mission College A warm welcome was given by Vice President Michael Allen, from Mission College. Vice President Allen provided the deans information on both his educational and work experience background. He is a former CTE Dean at a community college in the state of Washington. He also shared some information on the recent graduates from Los Angeles Mission College. There were 350 graduates that walked last week out of the 550 that applied from Mission College. RECESS TO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Workforce Development Committee Minutes Dr. Felicito Cajayon reported information on the request from the Board Members to survey the CTE Deans in order to find the missing gap in obtaining external funding grants. With the new chancellor and board members being appointed there will be a lot of push for external funding. 1 The link to this survey will be sent to the deans today and requires their immediate attention. A hard copy of this survey was giving to the deans as well. Dr. Cajayon gave out flyers where the district was awarded two grants related to different training options. Steve Moch from the district office explained the training options for both grants, one being manufacturing and the other related to alternative fuel. Any campus within the district that has a relationship with a company that has employees that have been on the job for more than 90 days and work more than 32 hours a week can qualify for free training related to soft skills. The alternative fuel training requires a relationship with any company public or private that has a fleet. The Workforce development office at the district will provide the trainers and all necessary equipment for the training. Steve and Dr.Cajayon are willing to go out to the companies with the deans that have these relationships to offer this free training. These options are in line with bringing in money to the district. Dr. Cajayon distributed the Intent to Award documentation from the State Chancellor office. This documentation states what grants were funded and those that were not funded. Los Angeles City College was funded for the Small Business Sector Navigator and Los Angesles Trade Tech College was funded under the Information Communication Technonolgy (ICT)/ Digital Media Grant. Dr. Cajayon reported that his office did apply for the Making it in America grant, but did not mention if it has been funded as of 6/20/2013 or not. RECONVENE CTE DEANS MEETING CTE Meeting Minutes (cont.) Business & Industry Committee Update Dr. Cajayon and Dr. Lucia Robles reported their efforts to build a district wide Business & Industry Committee to support the colleges in developing curriculum, grants and core indicators. This committee will also be able to give letters of support for upcoming grants application within the district. The first meeting was held on June 17, 2013 and those that attended this meeting have already committed to meeting once a quarter at the district office. This is in efforts to meet the Boards recommendations to build more of these sorts of committees. Dr. Cajayon stated that we want to add more to the campus list of industry partners without duplicating the efforts of the campuses. He also stated that we as a district want to build a war chest of employers. Dean Elmer Bugg of Los Angeles Southwest College stated that, “We as the deans need to sit at the table and discuss this strategy before moving forward”. Dr. Cajayon stated that we cannot solely rely on the WIBs industry list; we have to build our own. Dr. Cajayon also stated that if there are further questions we can talk offline. Dr. Robles met Mr. Shula at a United States Green Building Council (USGBC) Meeting where several students from East Los Angeles College were in attendance and because of their large support their campus won a lecture at the their campus from Mr. Shula which will be held at a later date. Mr. Shula shared his website with the CTE deans as well as a USGBC Conference held in San Francisco in 2012. More than 35,000 people were in attendance at this conference. He further explained how a business has to see the value of going “green.” It’s all about the payback from going “green” says Mr. Shula. Mission College’s Music and Science building have won several Green Building awards, one being LEED Platinum. Piper Watkins from Los Angeles City College asked Mr. Shula about internships within his company. Mr. Shula informed the deans that he is currently looking for interns in Marketing, Social Media and Business Development. Dean Bugg asked Mr. Shula if he could send the deans a list of his requirements for interns in both his company and any other company he may know of that is looking for interns in the green industry. Other Items and Announcements Introduction to the Early Intervention Certificate in Child Development The Early Intervention Assistant Certificate is a CDE initiative through the State Chancellor Office, and is funded through WestED. The following six campuses are participating: LA Mission College LA City College LA Trade Tech College Pierce College LA Southwest College West Los Angeles College Janice Silver and Gloria Daims are the co-coordinators of this project at LAMC. Advisory Meeting to determine community need, collaborations and resources was held at LAMC last 2/8/2013. The Child Development Discipline committee is seeking the dean’s advice and feedback to take back to the Curriculum Committee. The deans advise all six campuses to submit one letter of intent to LOWDL and to have all class requirements be the same at all six campuses. 3 Dean Bugg mentioned that a CTE Dean from all nine campuses should co-chair all Curriculum Committee Meeting at each individual campus. He also mentioned that since former Vice President Renee Martinez of East Los Angeles College and now President of Los Angeles City College has not been at the table of the CTE Deans Meeting, the deans need to find a CIO Representative to replace Ms. Martinez. This effort would keep the deans updating on the talks at the Vice Presidents Meetings within the district. CTE Deans Retreat Dr. Robles requested that the deans email her dates that may work for the CTE Deans Retreat. State Chancellor Office Audit Dr. Robles informed the deans of the federal audit done at the State Chancellor Office. A finding was issued since on site monitoring at the campuses are not being done. She informed the deans that on site monitoring well be conducted at each individual campus in the near future. We need to prepare ourselves so that we are ready for these visits.
