SAMPLE INDUCTION FOR NEW STARTERS ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
WASTE MANAGEMENT

The University is committed to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, we currently recycle around
60% of all our waste. You can help us to increase this. All buildings have blue recycling bins into which you
can place the following items;
Yes please!
Paper – Magazines, junk mail, catalogues, print paper, drinks cartons and Tetra-pak etc.
Glass – Bottles, jars, glasses etc.
Cardboard – Flat packed cardboard boxes, pizza boxes, egg cartons, cardboard food packaging etc
Cans – Food tins (washed), drinks cans, foil and foil trays etc.
Plastics – All types of plastics, polythene wrap, clear plastic bags, plastic food trays and containers, plastic
bottles etc.
No Thanks!
Crisp wrappers, chocolate wrappers, food waste, batteries, polystyrene, clothes etc.





A desktop recycling bin can be requested from Environment@winchester.ac.uk
You can also recycle batteries in many areas around the campus
Large recyclable items such as furniture or large quantities of cardboard can be collected for recycling by
the Porters
All waste electrical items must be collected by the Porters for recycling
Any waste IT equipment must be collected for recycling by the Helpdesk
LIGHTING




You should always turn the lights out in your working area/teaching room when you leave, this is
especially important at the end of the working day
You should not bring in your own additional lighting for your workspace, if this is required this should be
requested from maintenance which will be supplied with an energy efficient lamp
If you notice outside lights on when it is light, please report these to maintenance
Please consider if you need the lights in your office on during the day
HEATING


Additional heating and cooling devices are strictly prohibited by university policy e.g. electric heaters and
Air Conditioning units
If your working space is too warm, please inform maintenance who may be able to adjust the heating for
you, do not open the windows unnecessarily as this wastes energy
COMPUTERS





PC’s and printers should always be switched off at the end of the day
Monitors should also always be turned off at the end of the day
You can opt to have your PC turned on automatically in the morning by speaking to ITS (you should always
turn off the PC at the wall before you go on leave)
Laser Cartridges etc should be sent to helpdesk for recycling
Please print double sided at all times, preferably 2 pages per sheet as this helps us reduce paper wastage
TRANSPORT





The preferred method for business travel is to use public transport
UK Domestic air business travel should be avoided where practicable
Green Loans are available for purchasing public transport season tickets, bicycles and mopeds
The nearest cycle facilities to your office or working place are located at ?????????
You should always ask visitors to the university to consider public transport as parking on site is limited
WATER


The university is committed to reducing water consumption
If you notice dripping taps or leaks please inform the maintenance department
FOOD




The University is a fair-trade University
When entertaining visitors please try to use reusable cups and glasses in preference to disposable cups
When ordering catering for meetings we try to provide our own mugs or request reusable cups in
preference to disposable cups
The University is committed to ethical food and the LIFE menu (Local, Independent, Fair, Ethical) should be
considered when providing food for meetings or guests
