In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – A; SUNY Model European Union To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the SUNY Model European Union is a prestigious international conference held in New York City to foster global discourse on issues currently facing the European Union; 2. Whereas, the conference will occur from March 26 - 28, 2015 in New York City; 3. Whereas, nine students will be attending from Drake University; 4. Whereas, three students will not be receiving any academic credit and are seeking assistance in covering registration costs; 5. Whereas, Drake students have been attending this conference for over ten years; 6. Whereas, attendees will represent Drake University; 7. Whereas, this will allow the students to engage in responsible global citizenship, as well as all other components of the Drake Mission Statement; 8. Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook; Now therefore, be it: Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $450.00 to cover registration costs associated with the SUNY Model European Union. 2 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $580.00 be allocated to the Drake University Curling Club to cover costs associated with renting practice space. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – B; Drake University Curling Club Ice Center Rental To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the Drake University Curling Club exists to spread the sport of curling to students at Drake; 2. Whereas, the funds allocated would be used to rent space at the Metro Ice Arena for 3 practices during the Spring semester; 3. Whereas, the Drake University Curling Club has been active on campus since 2009; 4. Whereas, the organization hopes to begin competing in tournaments across the Midwest; 5. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – C; National Conference of Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the purpose of the National Conference of Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education is to address racist incidents and discrepancies that minorities face in higher education and focus on how relationships can be improved on campuses all across the country to provide more opportunities for culturally diverse and traditionally underrepresented people; 2. Whereas, the conference will occur from May 26 – 30, 2015 in Washington, D.C.; 3. Whereas, the student attending will represent Drake University; 4. Whereas, this conference represents the responsible global citizenship component of the Drake University Mission Statement; 5. Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook; Now, therefore, be it Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $574.50 to cover registration, lodging, and transportation costs associated with the National Conference of Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education. 4 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $250.00 be allocated to UNICEF to cover the cost of prizes for the Tap Water Project Trivia Night. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – D; UNICEF Tap Water Project Trivia Night To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the primary goal of Drake UNICEF is to create a campus initiative led by students in order to make the world a better place for children; 2. Whereas, the organization is planning a Tap Water Project Trivia Night in order to raise awareness of the water situation in developing countries; 3. Whereas, the Trivia Night will occur on March 26, 2015; 4. Whereas, an anticipated 50 students will attend; 5. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – E; USSA Legislative Conference To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the goal of the conference is to provide students with the opportunity to develop their organizing and leadership skills, expand their career opportunities, and network, while discussing current legislative issues affecting students; 2. Whereas, the conference is taking place March 27-30, 2015 in Washington, D.C.; 3. Whereas, three students will represent Drake University; 4. Whereas, these students will participate in hands-on workshops, led by experts, on organizing, leadership development, legislation, higher education access, voter registration, social justice issues, and increasing student involvement on college campuses; 5. Whereas, the students hope to present the information learned at Drake and increase opportunities on campus; 6. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $2,481.00 to cover registration, transportation, and lodging costs associated with the USSA Legislative Conference. 6 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $2,690.00 be allocated to Enactus to cover travel and lodging costs associated with 2015 Enactus National Competition. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – F; Enactus National Competition To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the mission of the Enactus is to give students the opportunity to gain professional experience in a high-level presentation environment; 2. Whereas, the event is occurring on April 13th – April 16th in St. Louis, Missouri; 3. Whereas, the anticipated attendance is eighteen students; 4. Whereas, this event will allow Enactus to bring back skills and connections that further their organization; 5. Whereas, the organization is covering the registration costs associated with the event; 6. Whereas, attendees will represent Drake University; 7. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $2,690.00 to Enactus for transportation and lodging costs associated with 2015 Enactus National Competition. 7 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $625.50 be allocated to the Chinese Students and Scholars Association to cover material and planning costs associated with Chinese Night 2015. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – G; Chinese Students and Scholars Association Chinese Night To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the mission of the Chinese Scholars and Students Association is to expose the Drake community to Chinese culture and traditions; 2. Whereas, the event is occurring on March 6th in Parent’s Hall; 3. Whereas, the anticipated attendance is two hundred and fifty students; 4. Whereas, similar events in the past let the Chinese Scholars and Students Association expose two hundred individuals to Chinese culture and tradition; 5. Whereas, the organization is covering the food and other planning costs associated with the event from their annual budget; 6. Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook; Now, therefore, be it Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $625.50 to the Chinese Students and Scholars Association for material and planning costs associated with Chinese Night 2015. 8 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $700.00 be allocated to the Middle East Peace and Prosperity Alliance to cover costs associated with bringing two speakers, Eran Efrati and Maya Wind, to the Drake University campus. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150315] – H; Middle Eastern Peace and Prosperity Alliance Presentation To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the mission of the Middle Eastern Peace and Prosperity Alliance is to promote peace and to educate Drake students about the culture, history, and current events happening in the Middle East; 2. Whereas, the two speakers were specifically chosen because they reflect the ideals in the mission statement of the Middle Eastern Peace and Prosperity Alliance; 3. Whereas, the event will occur on April 15th, 2015 on Pomerantz Stage; 4. Whereas, the anticipated attendance is seventy students; 5. Whereas, this will allow the students to engage in responsible global citizenship, as well as all other components of the Drake Mission Statement; 6. Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook; Now therefore, be it: Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $700.00 to the Middle Eastern Peace and Prosperity Alliance to cover costs associated with bringing two speakers, Eran Efrati and Maya Wind, to the Drake University campus. 9 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $691.00 be allocated to the two students to cover transportation costs associated with attending the Law and Society Association Conference. In the Drake University Student Senate 5 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – I; Law and Society Association Conference To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the Law and Society Association Conference is a prestigious conference held in Seattle, Washington to foster research on current legal issues among Drake’s Law, Politics, and Society students. 2. Whereas, the conference will occur from May 28th-31st, 2015 in Seattle, Washington. 3. Whereas, two students were personally selected by an academic advisor to attend this conference; 4. Whereas, the students will not be receiving any academic credit for this research opportunity; 5. Whereas, Drake University will be represented on a domestic scale at one of the largest legal research conferences in the country; 6. Whereas, members and students of Drake University have been recognized for their research at this conference in the past; 7. Whereas, this will allow the students to engage in elements of the Drake University Mission Statement; 8. Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook; Now therefore, be it: Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $691.00 to the two students to cover transportation costs associated with attending the Law and Society Association Conference. We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $2,700.00 be allocated to Rainbow Union for event costs associated with hosting the Other Prom. 10 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY In the Drake University Student Senate 03 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – J; Rainbow Union The Other Prom To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the mission of the Rainbow Union is to “provide a safe, welcoming, and confidential safe space to all students”; 2. Whereas, twenty to forty-five Rainbow Union members will help monitor this event with an expected attendance of one hundred high school community members; 3. Whereas, Rainbow Union seeks to create a safe space for Des Moines Area high school students to attend a prom since they may not feel safe going to their own; 4. Whereas, the event will occur on April 11th, 2015 at Drake University’s Parents Hall; 5. Whereas, the event will assist students in strengthening our ties with the Des Moines community by showing the rest of Des Moines how Drake celebrates diversity; 6. Whereas, the event show potential future Drake Students its welcoming environment to diversity; 7. Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Student Life Handbook; Now, therefore, be it Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $2,700.00 to Rainbow Union for event costs associated with hosting the Other Prom. We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to support programming that improves student life, to better the experience of Drake University students, and to provide a memorable experience to students, do hereby move that $2,007.00 be allocated to the Drake Dance 11 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY Team to cover transportation, registration, and lodging costs associated with the Mid American Dance Competition. In the Drake University Student Senate 05 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] – K; Drake Dance Team Mid American Dance Competition To approve the recommendation made by the Student Fees Allocation Committee (SFAC), in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the mission of the Drake Dance Team is to "support Drake’s athletic teams, assist the cheerleading squad and mascot in motivating the crowd, entertain the audience at games and other university functions through performances, as well as promote overall school spirit”; 2. Whereas, the competition is occurring from March 28 – 29, 2015 in Kansas City, Missouri; 3. Whereas, the twenty students are expected to attend; 4. Whereas, attending this competition will allow students to compete with other dance teams on a national level to bring spirit and enhance their performance experience; 5. Whereas, the organization is covering the costs of their uniforms and other equipment; 6. Whereas, attendees will represent Drake University; 7. Whereas, the allocations are consistent with the Drake University Student Life Handbook; Now, therefore, be it Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $2,007.00 to the Drake Dance Team for transportation, registration, and lodging costs associated the Mid American Dance Competition. We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to make campus more environmentally friendly and sustainable, do hereby move to allocate $7420.00 for the purchase of outdoor recycling bins. 12 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY In the Drake University Student Senate 05 March 2015 MOTION SS [150305] –L; Outdoor Recycling Bin Project To approve the recommendation made by the Facilities and Technology Senator and the Organization Council Senator, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, 6 steel outdoor recycling cans will be purchased and be placed next to existing trashcans outside of Olmsted, Hubbell, Cowles Library, the Fine Arts Center, and Cline. 2. Whereas, the recycling cans will be powder-coated blue and have signage on them to distinguish them as being for recycling. 3. Whereas, the recycling cans need to be durable enough to handle Iowa weather and campus activity. 4. Whereas, a survey of 142 Drake students showed that 70% believe recycling efforts should be increased. 5. Whereas, placing the recycling cans next to existing trash cans will help increase usage and help Facilities keep labor costs low in the existing recycling program already established at Drake. 6. Whereas, Drake University has been a leader in recycling efforts in the Des Moines area, helping create the recycling processing plants downtown. 7. Whereas, sustainability is embedded in Drake’s Strategic Plan and mission statement. 8. Whereas, Goal #51 of the Senate 60 aims to “investigate and implement ways to make Drake's campus more environmentally friendly.” Now, therefore, be it Moved. That, Drake University Student Senate allocates $7420.00 from the Quasi-endowment fund for the purchase of outdoor recycling bins. We, the members of Drake University Student Senate, in an effort to make campus more environmentally friendly and sustainable, do hereby express our support for the hiring of a full-time Sustainability Coordinator. 13 DRAKE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE REPRESENTING THE STUDENTS OF DRAKE UNIVERSITY In the Drake University Student Senate 05 March 2015 RESOLUTION SS [150305] – M; Sustainability Coordinator Position To approve the recommendation made by the Facilities and Technology Senator and the Sustainability Committee, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Drake University Student Senate. 1. Whereas, the Sustainability Committee is proposing that Drake hire a full-time sustainability coordinator on 1 January 2016, to report to the president of the university. 2. Whereas, the coordinator will chair the Sustainability Committee; 3. Whereas, research shows this is a financially feasible position. After two years, the sustainability coordinator should be able to demonstrate a clear and measurable path to paying for him- or herself through grants, energy savings, and recruitment. 4. Whereas, the Sustainability Committee has been effective but the needs are greater than an all-volunteer committee can provide; 5. Whereas, sustainability is embedded in Drake’s Strategic Plan and mission statement. In 2007, President David Maxwell was a charter signer of the President’s Climate Commitment and Drake launched the “Blue is Green” campaign; 6. Whereas, the Sustainability Committee contacted representatives of numerous institutions and found that the addition of a Sustainability Coordinator significantly improved the success rate and efficacy of sustainability efforts on campus. All of the representatives also indicated that they believed the position saved significant money due to the rapid identification of opportunities to cut waste or improve recruitment; 7. Whereas, the Sustainability Committee is seeking to obtain a similar resolution from Faculty Senate; 8. Whereas, Goal #51 of the Senate 60 aims to “investigate and implement ways to make Drake's campus more environmentally friendly.” Now, therefore, be it Resolved. That, Drake University Student Senate supports the hiring of a full-time Sustainability Coordinator. 14
