Reading - Goat in the Rug Guided Reading – Wool/Weaving Key Ideas and Details CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Craft and Structure CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.6 Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe. Activity – Weaving Standard 3.0 Creative Expression and Production Students will demonstrate the ability to organize knowledge and ideas for expression in the production of art. Indicator 1. Create images and forms from observation, memory, imagination, and feelings c. Create artworks that explore the uses of color, line, shape, texture, form, and selected principles of design, such as pattern, repetition, and contrast to express personal meaning Students will weave by using cardboard, large loom w/ large ribbon, or straw weaving. Cardboard: Materials – Cardboard, String, Scissors, Ruler, Pencil, Tape, Plastic Needle 1. 2. 3. 4. Teacher will precut 3 inch pieces of cardboard for students. Students will mark every ½ inch on parallel ends with a pencil. Students will cut slits on each end of cardboard to create their loom. Students will then wrap string through the cut slots & tape excess string to the back. 5. Students will thread a plastic needle with their choice of thread color. 6. Students will then weave. Large Loom: Materials – Yarn, Loom, Scissors, Ribbon 1. Students will tie one end of yarn on the first peg of the loom & loop the yarn on the pegs of the loom. 2. Students will use the Shed Stick (flat stick) and will go through the yarn in an over under pattern to create an opening to weave through. 3. Students will wrap the ribbon around the Stick Shuttle & begin to weave through the yarn. 4. Students will repeat the weave with the Stick Shuttle while changing the Shed Stick to create the opening each time. Straw Weaving: Materials – Straws, String, Tape 1. Students will choose 3 colors. 2. Have the students thread 1 piece of string through each of the 3 straws. 3. Once students have threaded the straws have them tape the thread to the straw to hold in place. 4. Students will tie the other end of the stings together. 5. Students will rotate their strings in a figure eight fashion until the string has run out. 6. Students will slide the woven pattern off the straw & tie at the end.
