C EL E B RA T IN G 36 Y EA R S O F G IV ING 36th Annual Thanksgiving Ingathering Saturday, November 7, 2015 The Thanksgiving Ingathering is a way for Iowa United Methodists to address hunger problems locally and around the world. This Supplement contains all the changes to the 2014 Thanksgiving Ingathering Book. PLEASE USE THE ORANGE 2014 BOOK for information on the various Thanksgiving Ingathering projects. That information is still correct for 2015 unless noted in this supplement. YOU WILL HAVE A NEW REMITTANCE FORM for 2015 in this supplement. Please use this new remittance Form when you come to the Ingathering in November. 2015 INGATHERING BOOK SUPPLEMENT CONGRATULATIONS IOWA UNITED METHODISTS! YOU MADE THE MILLION.......AGAINIIIIII The total for Ingathering 2014 was $1,037,046. This compares to $1,031,102. in 2013. Each year we are improving!! In the words taken from Micah 6:8, “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.” God requires that we love mercy, having compassion on others without judging them or their situation. We are to do what is right and allow God to lead the way. Let us be Candles of Hope by being a part of ending hunger and reaching out to those in various need through Thanksgiving Ingathering 2015. Set goals in your church by making kits for Iowa-Nigeria Partnership and UMCOR Depot, in which 67,074 total kits were given in 2014. Monetary giving to Church World Service, Self-Help International, Heifer International and P.E.T. will also make a difference to so many all over the world and be blessed by your generous hearts. The Thanksgiving Ingathering task force continues to set this goal for 2015-----$1,600,000.00 Together we can become Candles of Hope and Doers of the Word!! No changes. Remember to include $1 for toothpaste in your remittance check. School Kit. No changes Layette Kit. No changes, but value increase to $45 Sewing Kit. No changes, but value increase to $28 Birthing Kit. No changes Because of the often sensitive cultural and political contexts that surround the people we assist, we cannot allow any patriotic-or even religious- symbols to be used in the UMCOR relief kits. Well intentioned though these are, including them in the kits can create an obstacle that keeps this valuable relief aid from reaching the people we seek to help. Our priority must be to get aid to the most vulnerable populations. These symbols, such as flags or crosses, can be covered so that the item can still be used in the kits. UMCOR does not require that the source of manufacturing be removed from kit contents. BE SURE TO DESIGNATE UMCOR ON THE BOX FOR ALL THESE KITS 2015 UMCOR representatives to the Ingathering are Marvin & Iola Chickering, 206 North Roan St, Algona 50511 515-295-7519 imchick@netamumail.com IOWA NIGERIA PARTNERSHIP KITS Dorm Kit has been eliminated. BOOK KITS: NO elementary or secondary/high school books. ONLY theological books from 1980 and newer and Bibles will be accepted. Value is $35 for 5 new books. $5 value for 5 used books. Add $2 for each kit for Shipping. This is the 25th year of the Iowa-Nigeria Partnership. The primary focus of the INP is to assist the Nigerian church with their educational pursuits. Nigerian United Methodists say “NA GODE” to Iowa United Methodists. NOTE Birthing kits and layettes are collected by both UMCOR and INP. The contents of each kit are different along with the value difference. SO be sure to clearly mark the kit boxes – NIGERIA or UMCOR. This donation form MAY be needed by the buyer of any large item depending on the purchase price, because the donation form is necessary for tax purposes only if the buyer has paid more than $250 ABOVE the Fair Markel Value (appraised value) for the item. The form attached to the auction item may be used fill out the "Acknowledgement of Donation" form, which can be signed by the auction cashier and the site chair. The Fair Markel Value (appraised value) should be determined by the donating church group for each of their donated items and written on the above form before the quilt or woodcraft item is brought to the Thanksgiving Ingathering auction site. For most tied comforters, baby quilts, wall hangings, or other small projects, it would be very rare for them to bring the $250 above the appraised value that would require the "Acknowledgement of donation" form required for tax purposes. The tax deduction may be taken for any price paid above the appraised or fair market value a donation to the Thanksgiving lngathering. A good way to promote a quilt is to display it in the donating church and take reserve bids.
