Dear Parents,,,,
S
We hope that you and your children enjoyed your summer holiday and are ready
for a new successful academic year.
We would like to inform you of our policy concerning the English Language.
[
* Our Aims:
* To develop learner’s awareness and understanding of the language through the
integration of the four language skills.
* To help learners express their ideas and opinions in real life and through task based
on learning.
* To assist learners in acquiring critical thinking skills through extensive reading.
* To encourage learner independence and the acquisition of different strategies for
learning.
* Our Approach:
1- Grammar (Structure):
* Grammar will not be taught in isolation. Structures are presented in context and
integrated in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
* Learners practise structures orally and in written exercises allowing the teacher to
check learner’s ability to use it correctly.
2- Vocabulary: * Learners practise a variety of word skills which help children to
recognize and produce more interesting language.
3- Language Building: * Learners learn and practise rules for writing English. Also
they build on and increase their knowledge of written English. These rules are
essential to developing accuracy and good style in their own writing.
[
4- Spelling and Dictation:
* Spelling rules are presented and learners practice spelling, reading and writing of
target words with the same spelling patterns or by the following or applying the
rule. They also find the meaning of target words and write them in sentences,
extending their vocabulary at the same time.
* Each list will be dictated once a week.
5- Listening and Speaking:
* Listening will be practised and enhanced systematically through taped material in
the course book, fluency book and through class activities.
* Learners will be encouraged to express themselves in English during the English
Language classes (reading, writing, projects and research).
* Listening and Speaking will be continuously assessed through class activities.
6- Reading: * Learners will read, read and read for different purposes. Their reading
will focus on stories, authentic materials, poetry and comprehension texts. They will
be asked to do a lot of reading for pleasure to extend their reading experience and to
give a further opportunity for reading practice.
7- Writing:
* This skill will be enhanced through the writing tasks in their course book which
follows the form of the text type studied in each unit. This text also serves as a
model for the writing task.
* Learners will write their first draft and teachers will correct it in accordance to a
given rubric that students should use seriously and follow when writing. Their
teachers will only ask for a second draft if needed.
* Learners will be exposed to more than one kind of writing. Apart from the topics in
their books, they will have to write giving their opinion.
[
8- Assignments:
* Assignments are very important for consolidation of learning. Learners will be
given a short assignment on daily basis in their course book. A longer assignment
will be given when needed. Assignments will be part of learners’ continuous
assessment.
* Students must use pencil only in all English Books while they must use blue pen
in all copybooks and sheets.
* Any assigned homework should be submitted on the following day.
* Students are expected to do their homework accurately and neatly.
* If any assignment is presented otherwise, teachers will not accept it and students
have to repeat it in a proper manner as assignments are a part of the students
continuous assessment.
9- Assessment:- Learners will be assessed as follows:
* Rubrics (assessment units) will be used to help learners in self-evaluation and
familiarizing them with our criteria for assessment.
