Job Description
JOB TITLE:
Staff Nurse
ACCOUNTABLE TO:
Ward Manager
JOB PURPOSE:
To provide quality nursing care of the highest standard to our client base.
To assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised patient care within the multi-disciplinary team.
To lead the nursing team on a daily basis with support and guidance from the Clinical Nurse Specialist thus
ensuring maintenance of our high standards of care.
Provision of a safe and secure, but homely environment to all patients and visitors to the unit.
Responsibilities
Clinical

Assist in the providing, monitoring and supervising quality nursing care.

Act as mentor to junior staff and students when the need arises.

Promote good relationships with other members of the team, patient, relatives, visitors and other
agencies.

Communicate effectively with all professions and agencies involved in the care of each patient.

Ensure the smooth operation of the care team sytem and actively take responsibility as the key worker
for individual patients.

Undertake all duties as instructed by senior colleagues and ensure junior staff receive adequate
guidance in completing their duties.

Maintain discipline within the clinical area, informing the CNS or designated deputy of any deviations
from the accepted standards and abide by Pastoral Healthcare policies.

Ensure a high standard of nursing care is provided and patient’s rights and confidentiality are
safeguarded.

Plan and deliver therapeutic, occupational, educational and recreational activities for all patients on an
individual or group basis.

Ensure staff implement agreed policies relating to nursing procedures.

Liaise with all professionals and other agencies to achieve optimum levels of care for individual
patients.

Provide clinical advice, supervision and support to other health care workers.

Assist in the auditing of individual programmes of care on a regular basis.

Ensure effective handovers and regular staff meetings are held.

Administer drugs in accordance with agreed hospital medicine policy.
Administration

Prepare written reports for mental Health Review Tribunals, Hospital Manager Appeals, CTM and
Clinical Reviews.

Ensure correct implementation of admission, transfer and discharge procedure with specific reference
to the management of patient’s property and the requirements of the MHA 1983.

To monitor ward supplies and order within the Clinic budget.

Inform staff on a regular basis of any changes, forthcoming events or future developments.
Professional

Abide by legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice, maintaining current use of MHA
1983 and Children Act 1989.

Ensure all staff follow legal requirements and statutory rules.

Accept responsibility for ensuring personal and professional development and competence.

Maintain standards of conduct in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust
Policies.

Actively provide supervision for junior staff.

Actively seek supervision from Senior Nurse or Clinical Team leader.
Research and Audit Role

Assists the Registered Manager in creating an environment that supports evidence-based practice and
reflective learning

Assists the Registered Manager in the dissemination and application of relevant research findings

Participates in any research initiatives that are undertaken pertinent to the speciality supports the
Registered Manager in ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in the team

duties other than to those entitled to receive it. The post holder must ensure that he confidentiality of
personal data remains secure and the terms of the Data Protection Act and relevant Pastoral Healthcare
Ltd policies are met in respect of information held on Pastoral Healthcare Ltd.’s computerised systems.

Health and Safety

workplace.
To adhere to Health and Safety and C.O.S.H.H regulations and safe working procedures of Pastoral
Healthcare Ltd regarding substances, materials, protective clothing and equipment and others specified in
the catering department and all other areas you are required to work in. This will include all rules and
regulations laid down in pursuance of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Copies will be given on
commencement.
To report to your immediate Supervisor / Manager any matter relating to any part of the Pastoral Healthcare
Ltd, which appears to suggest a Health and Safety hazard. To report all hazards, accidents, incidents,
faulty equipment and maintenance omissions immediately to Supervisor / Manager.
Clinical Governance
Clinical Governance is the framework through which Pastoral Healthcare is accountable for continuously
improving the quality of its services and safeguarding the high standards of care. It does so by creating
and maintaining an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.
Every member of staff must work within this framework as specified in his/her individual job description. If
you have concerns on any clinical governance matters these should be raised with your line manager,
professional adviser, or a more senior member of management. Your attention is also drawn to the Trust
guidance on Raising Concerns about Provision of Patient Care.
You have a responsibility for contributing to the reduction of infections.
Training, education and development
All staff are required to participate in any necessary training and development, including regular appraisal
and supervision.
CRB Check
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be
necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Criminal Records to check for any previous
criminal convictions.
