Qualifying criteria for an ICE North West Heritage Award
The aim of the Award is to celebrate civil engineering in North West England and to raise public
awareness of civil engineering and the benefits it brings to society, specifically with regard to the
category of “heritage civil engineering” as defined below.
All of the following three criteria must be met to qualify for consideration:




It must located within the ICE North West region: Cumbria, Cheshire, Lancashire, Isle of
Man, Greater Manchester, Merseyside
The work of civil engineering is at least 70 years old
It must still be extant (though not necessarily operational or in working order)
It is of cultural and/or historical significance and/or is or was a remarkable work of civil
engineering in its own right
Historical or cultural significance might depend on any one or more of the following factors (or other
factors deemed to be of comparable significance):







Its innovation at the time of its design or construction
Its wide usage over time
Its impact on lifestyle, culture, history and/or the economy or economic development
Its association with a significant historical event or significant person
The fact that it has become widely recognised
The fact that it has achieved listed status, or is being considered for the award of some
heritage status
The fact that it has become a rare extant example of its kind
The work may be considered to constitute remarkable civil engineering on the same grounds as
other ICE North West Awards, and/or because it holds some particular status (it’s one of the tallest,
widest, heaviest, oldest examples of its kind, or made early use of a particular technique, etc).
Anyone can send us a nomination for the ICE North West Civil Engineering Heritage Award, it is
open to members and non-members alike.
Contact details provided are for verification purposes only and will not be published or held/used in
any other way.
The judges’ decision will be final, but the nomination may be re-submitted in subsequent years.
