Science Project – Biodiversity and the Classification System for Living Things

Due – Friday, October 30, 8:51 am

Learning Goals:

Scientists classify living organisms into 6 kingdoms using their characteristics. The levels Phylum, Class,

Order, Family, Genus and Species are used to identify each living organism and further classify them according to shared and unique features of form and function. Students will research and classify an organism and share their learning so that others can use the classification system to identify it.

Project:

Students will create a flip booklet for an organism of their choice. Each page of the booklet will identify one level of the classification system for their organism and share an important characteristic or fact about it, along with a picture. Students should show how similar organisms are grouped together in the levels of classification according to form (their body structure) and function (what they do or how they live). Facts and pictures should be chosen carefully so that the name of the organism will not be revealed until the final ‘Species’ page of the booklet. In this way, the students can try to guess each other’s organism as they share their booklets with each other.

Take care with this project – Booklet should be neatly and evenly folded and stapled. Writing should be neatly outlined in fine-tipped marker or typed and carefully glued into booklet. Pictures can be handdrawn and coloured with pencil crayon, or cut from magazines or printed from the computer.
