Advanced Methodology
To foster in students a reflective approach to their teaching practice.
To deepen students’ understanding of the classroom and the teaching / learning process.
To enable students to extract from classroom observation of a wide variety of teaching situations a proper understanding of the ways in which classroom activity affects
learning as well as appropriate practical implications.
Teaching English for Special Purposes
To acquaint students with specific areas of language teaching and some of the specialised teaching methods and materials used.
To give an overview of English for Academic Purposes and how reading, writing, listening, speaking and study skills are taught within an academic context.
To provide the context for teaching English for specific purposes such as business, law and medicine and to equip students with the skills needed to teach written and oral
communication for business.
To introduce students to the skill of technical writing and translating.
IT & Language Learning
To familiarise students with various computer related means for language teaching, and to evaluate their role in assisting learning.
To introduce and evaluate a range of programs, multimedia/CALL materials and other electronic ways of supporting language teaching/learning.
To consider how technology can add to the learning process, in historical and contemporary contexts.
Critically investigate the link between technology, literacy, communication and society; and the nature of language education in an ‘informationalist’ age.

16. Syllabus
Advanced Methodology
Enhancing students’ awareness of their own teaching practice. Observing range of language classes and drawing conclusions from the observations. Practical aspects of teaching. Current
issues in teaching and pedagogy.
Teaching English for Special Purposes
An introduction to teaching ESP in academic and business contexts, focusing on learner acceptance into the target culture and awareness of learner needs. How English is taught in academic
contexts with scope for students to reflect on their academic practices in reading, writing listening, speaking and study.
How English is taught in business contexts, looking at the role of teacher and students. Communication skills for presenting, negotiating and persuading orally and in writing. Professional and
social cultures (case studies). Analysis of examples of technical writing and translating and study their key linguistic features.
IT & Language Learning
Computer assisted language learning; email and synchronous forms of computer mediated communication; internet and multimedia as resource for language teaching; concordancing and
corpus; web-site design project.
