SASH Art Competition Volunteer
General Information
On 10 October 2015 – World Homeless Day, SASH will be
launching our Art Competition – ‘Cardboard Boxes are not
for sleeping in’. The competition will be open to anyone in
Yorkshire, of any age from beginners to experienced artists,
to raise awareness of youth homelessness within Yorkshire
and to raise funds for the charity SASH. The competition
will have a special ‘guest’ judge and it will culminate with an
exhibition of the winning entries at a Yorkshire based Art
Gallery followed by a touring exhibition
About SASH
SASH prevents young people from becoming homeless by
offering them a room in the home of a volunteer. Our
services ensure that 16-25 year-olds who can’t go home get
the support they need so that a time of crisis does not lead
to a vicious circle of homelessness and unemployment. We
work across York, North Yorkshire, Hull and the East Riding
of Yorkshire. Through an emergency accommodation
scheme known as ‘Nightstop’ our volunteers, or ‘hosts’,
provide a bed for the night in their spare room, an evening
meal and breakfast the next day. We also provide longer
term support for young people through our ‘supported
lodgings’ scheme as well as promoting positive activities
through our SASH Active and SASH Enable projects.
Tasks
Assisting with the organisation and delivery of the
SASH Art competition, will include:
 Helping to promote the competition to appropriate
organisations, groups and members of the public
through your own contacts and social media, SASH
contacts and Art Festivals
 Judging all entries of the competition to produce a
shortlist, the overall winners will then be decided by
the ‘guest’ judge (Please note volunteers who want
to judge will not be allowed to also submit an entry
to the competition but can enter a box to be
exhibited and sold).
 Gaining support from possible sponsors.
 Contact local groups, homeless projects and schools
to organise and deliver workshops or ‘cafes’ to
encourage involvement in the project
 Supporting with the organisation of the final
exhibition.
Volunteers can do one or more of these tasks
depending on their availability, interest and
experience

Commitment
Activities from home, SASH York office or in the local
community, including meetings in York and possible travel
within Yorkshire.
Time commitment: March/April 2015 start – on going
through to Summer 2016. Flexible ad hoc hours depending
on volunteers’ availability and optional attendance of
monthly meetings in York

Deadline and How to
Apply
Experience and/or an interest in the Visual Arts
An interest in youth homelessness and able to
understand the aims of SASH’s work with young
people and convey these to a wider audience.
Experience and/or an interest in organising events,
ideally with a fundraising or charity focus.
Good organisational and negotiation skills.
Good communication skills, including confident
telephone manner and writing and presentation
skills.
Chance to use and develop your skills and ideas.
Chance to gain understanding and knowledge of the
youth homelessness sector.
Chance to meet with other volunteers with similar
interests and skills
Chance to gain experience and knowledge of the
charity sector, and fundraising in particular.
On-going support from SASH staff.
Induction training will be given.
Agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed.
Volunteers can start immediately from Spring 2015
through to Summer 2016 – no deadline as on-going
