Main Idea & Details Steps:
1. Decide what the topic of the passage is.
2. Find the main idea of the topic in the passage.
3. Look for details to support the main idea of the
topic in the passage.
Analyze Steps:
1. Break the passage down into small parts/pieces.
2. Determine reasons, causes, and motives.
3. Draw conclusions and make generalizations
about the parts of the passage.

Instructional Activities. How will we teach this goal?
Main Idea and Details:
1. Students will work with teacher to read a text.
2. Students and teacher will work through text around three times to ensure
comprehension of the text.
3. Teacher will encourage students to create a main idea about the text as a whole.
4. Students and teacher will locate the details in the text that will support the main idea
that was created.
5. Students will slowly be given responsibility for finding the main idea and details as they
work through the read180 program.
6. The teacher will always backtrack, ensure the students are following along and finding
the main idea and details properly-asking questions such as
-Why did you think that was the main idea?
-How did you know/why do you think that detail
was going to support the main idea?
Analyze Steps:
1. Students will work with teacher to read a text.
2. Students and teacher will work through text around three times to ensure
comprehension of text.
3. Teacher will encourage students to think of a reason that the story was written.
4. Teacher will then discuss with students why they thought the story was written.
5. Teacher will then encourage students to think of the causes or the motives that caused
the event or story to happen.
6. Teacher and students will discuss answers with each other to ensure students have the
ability to correctly find a cause or motive.
7. Students and teacher will then as a whole discuss what the text concluded as and then
make generalizations about certain passages of the text.
8. Students an teacher will go back through steps to double check if everything make sense
and that everything was done correctly.
