Project No. 21CH05-01 (Times New Roman 12) Anti-oxidant activity of pure compounds extract from methanolic extract of twigs of Mangifera odorata (Title Times New Roman 14, Bold) Sorachai Sae-lim1, and Muhummud Niyomdacha2 (Times New Roman 12) 1 Department of Chemistry, Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, Nakhon Phathom, 73170, Thailand 2 Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Silapakhon University, Nakhon Phathom, 73000, Thailand E-mail addresses: teppode@hotmail.com (Times New Roman 11) Introduction and Objectives (Times New Roman 12) Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) have been used widely as antioxidants in foods but concerns over the safety of their use have led towards interests in natural antioxidants. The aims of the present were to investigate the components of Mangifera odorata more thoroughly and search for the anti-oxidation activity of pure compounds. Methods (Times New Roman 12) 1.Purification of methanolic extract Crude methanol was chromatographed on a quick column chromatography over silica gel. The selected fractions were further purified to afford 5 compounds. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of UV, IR and NMR spectroscopic data. 2. Evalution of anti-oxidation activity Methanolic extract and 5 pure compounds were tested for their anti-oxidative activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Results (Times New Roman 12) Isolation of the chemical constituents from the twigs of Mangifera odorata by chromatographic and crystallization technique, yielded 5 compounds: taxifolin, eriodictyol, narigenin, 3,5,7,3,5-pentahydroxyflavanonol and mangiferin. The methanolic extract and 5 pure compounds were tested for their anti-oxidative activity. The methanolic extract, eriodictyol, narigenin, and mangiferin exhibited strong radical scavenging activity. The other pure compounds examined showed moderate activity. Conclusion (Times New Roman 12) The methanolic extract, eriodictyol, narigenin, and mangiferin exhibited strong radical scavenging activity. This work has demonstrated that Mangifera odorata are among the potential sources of anti-oxidation activity. Further exploration should be performed to search for compounds with greater efficacy and specificity for the treatment of many human diseases.
