Calhoun – 5E Lesson Plan
Teacher: James Vivian and James Hall
Date: 02/18-22/2013
Timeline: CABC-day
Subject area /7th Grade Science: 4.5 Organism Behavior & Survival
Materials: PPT; PDF; Lab Journal; BrainPop; Doceri; Thinking Maps; White Board; Computer Lab
TEKS: Objectives/TEKS 1A, 2C, D, E, 3B, 11C
PROCESS SKILLS
 1A – demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations as outlined in the Texas Safety
Standards.
 2C – collect and record data using the International System of Units (SI) and qualitative means such as
labeled drawings, writing, and graphic organizers.
 2D – construct tables and graphs, using repeated trials and means, to organize data and identify patterns.
 2E – analyze data to formulate reasonable explanations, communicate valid conclusions supported by the
data, and predict trends.
 3B – use models to represent aspects of the natural world such as human body systems and plant and animal
cells.
Content
11B – Explain variation within a population or species by comparing external features, behaviors, or physiology of
organisms that enhance their survival such as migration, hibernation, or storage of food in a bulb.

ENGAGE / Bell Work: RUBRIC A,B
 What would you do to survive?
 How can we as a team survive?
EXPLORATION: RUBRIC A,C,E,F
 HOTS: Students will take away an understanding that changes in populations occur over several generations.

Survival is just a roll of the dice
EXPLANATION/The student will know: ABC
 Brain Pop: Biomes
 Explain how an organism’s traits and behaviors help it survive in its habitat.
 Explain why different populations within the same species have different traits and behaviors.

Academic Vocabulary:
Language of Instruction: hibernation, migration, physiology, variation, population
ELABORATION RUBRIC D
 Compare physiology, external features, and behaviors that aids in the survival of a changing habitat.
SWBAT:
 Identify changes that species have undergone and what environmental condition caused those changes.
EVALUATION / Exit Ticket: RUBRIC C
 I can explain how an organism’s traits and behavior help it survive.
