Claudia Velasco (TRIO SSS), Sherron Rouzan (Counseling), Phyllis Braxton (VP
Student Services), Tony Law (Mount Saint Mary), Tom Gutto (LMU), Anne AubertSantelli (USC), Patricia N-Enyekwe (CSUDH), Darnell Edwards (CSUN).
The meeting was called to order at 1:10 PM by H. Young

Transfer Directors Report






H. Young started the meeting thanking the university representatives that are in
attendance.
H. Young. We are on the second year with the Cook Grant , the partnership
between LMU, West and El Camino. Students must have English 101 completed,
the students must have an ability to write, and we are having challenges with the
African males here at West.
T. Gutto Co-Director of cook program said that last year the program was very
successful. LMU is trying to figure how to extend the program beyond the 3 years
it was initiated to function. West is still accepting applications for this summer;
there is an interview for then and a small process for participation.
H. Young said that USC is looking for data in the honors program, 30% are
represented in the honor program for African Americans, 20% Hispanics 8%
Asian, and Caucasian is about 19%. The GPA in the fall will goes from 3.0 to 3.2
for honors with some additional requirements, like community services, transfer
requirements in where the students have to present a paper for the representatives
to sign up. We have currently 117 students in the honors program, 49 students that
actually have a current contract this semester; the contract is semester by semester
basis. Is up to the instructor to accept or not an honors class.
H. young asked the instructors to have an extra paper or an extra project for the
students to work on. One of the concerns at state level is that the honors programs
do not represent diversity, specially undeserved students.
SB1440 the bill from Senator Padilla, has being challenging and difficult for the
CCC and the CSU; ADJ, Psychology and math. We are having problems with
ADJ and CSUDH. Corey Williams will work closely with CSUDH to facilitate
the communication for the AAT between West and Dominguez.












LMU is working closely with West to help transfer students; they try to work
closely with the IGETC to solve this issue.
H. Young is working closely with the private universities to help out transfer
students to complete their classes.
S. Rouzan talked about ETS conference in where they informed that, the
organization is planning to do an assist.org in which students will be able to
match different universities and their requirements. She mentioned that having the
privates involved will be a big help for counselors and students. Chancellors have
the same goal of transfer our students in less than four years, if not it will take
longer for them to get out and have a smooth transition.
A. Aubert, USC representative said that they are going to change their curriculum
and expand the courses accepted by them within two years.
T. Gutto representative from LMU reported that in an excited year for LMU; they
have gone from 350 to 39 Transfer students that will be admitted this year. Last
fall they have 19 applicants from west; 3 were admitted, zero enrolled. This fall
they have 37 applicants, 11 admitted, 3 enroll. They want to increase the numbers
of students applying to LMU, the goal is to increase the communication. They are
implementing a new core curriculum that will benefit transfer students; part of his
role is to try to give students credit for the courses they take. Financial aid is
another area that he is working; to make a combination of need and merit. The
better gpa and the more need they have the more money they will get.
H. Young noted that the private universities will waive fees for students applying
to their schools; we need to communicate with them. We would like to
partnership with the private universities for them to come and to talk to our
students about financing their education in a private institution, and maybe do two
workshops in the fall, to educate our students in financing their education.
S. Rouzan says that it should be a different way of commutating to our students
about money and how they put the financial aid package together. S. Rouzan
continues to say that some universities do not look at West as a college that has
students ready to transfer and we are in these schools back yard, so we request
their presence in our campus.
H. young says that the connection amongst the college and the universities must
be stronger; our students should be invited to more events. We are requesting the
university representatives to work with us to provide more services to our students
to be able to sell their schools.
S. Rouzan offered to feature their campuses in our website.
H. Young announced that the honors and transfer page will be revamp.
D. Edwards. Representative from CSUN announced that they have a new
president; they want to increase visibility and graduation rates as well as sports.
They received over 17,000 applications. 229 were West applications and 32
students were admitted and matriculated so far. Students must submit their final
transcripts by august 16. Transfer orientation will take place on July 31st, new
veteran’s office in campus. They may open admittance for spring but they are not
sure.
Patricia E. the representative from CSUDH report that we have a partnership with
West; she wants to sign up students early in the partnership; students must see her





once a semester, if the students follow through they will be able to guaranteed
admission. If the students that applied forgot to send their transcripts on time, they
will be place in a waiting list. CSUDH is taking appeals, is the transcripts were
not received. Preview days are happening at CSUDH, and they are inviting
students to attend. They may be accepting applications for spring 2013. August 9th
is the veteran’s days at their school. The registration will be online. If students
have received a denial letter they can appeal. CSUDH is taking applications for
international students.
A. Aubert representative for USC wants to continue to increase the transfer
population it is important for them. They also have a veteran’s population. Dance
schools will be new base on a scholarships, it may be a four year program. They
received 47 applications form west this year; the grades for spring must be in by
June 1st. USC is contacting students that have applied for two competitive majors,
to see if they have a third choice that is not as competitive.
T. Law representative of Mount Saint Mary report that three students have applied
from West, zero were admitted. The school received seven applications for nonnursing and they all were admitted; five have already accepted. Lowest gpa was
2.7 to 2.9. The school has become more transfer friendly, two new majors a BA in
Journalism and New Media; and the second one on Global Politics. The media
program can be a BS or BA. Mount Saint Mary transfer day is on the spring, and
is only one day.
H. Young announced that transfer fair will be on September 9th, Monday. She will
include some workshops from universities.
S. Rouzan said that 11% are veterans and the population will increase even more;
since more are going to be discharge to CA; and CA paid the most money than the
other states.
H. Young requested to have an advisory meeting twice a year.
