Appropriate Referral to Medical Imaging
Providing balanced services for public and private
patients for routine and emergency procedures is
becoming increasingly difficult to achieve. Health
resources are limited and demand for imaging as a
diagnostic, interventional or therapeutic service is
ever increasing.
The MIDS business model is a method of
conducting clinical imaging services in a more
business-like manner to ensure most effective use
of resources. The MIDS model does not make a
profit and MI clinicians strive to provide quality
services.
As a valued referrer, you will be allocated a budget
by the facility, which includes a stipulated number
of imaging examinations based on your previous
activity and any approved increase in activity.
While MIDS is being implemented in your LHD,
there will be more occasions when you, as
stakeholders, will be consulted about your
expectations and requirements of Medical Imaging
services. You are encouraged to participate fully in
the process as MIDS is not just a medical imaging
solution, but a whole of hospital / LHD solution.
The MIDS will provide you with monthly reports so
you can see how you are tracking against your
activity ‘budget’. This will provide your department
with a great opportunity to better manage which of

your patients are referred for what imaging
examinations or procedures at what time of what
day. It is an opportunity within the health system to
explore most appropriate options with the imaging
consultant and staff.
For example, can this CT wait until the morning or
is it a true emergency requiring MI staff to be
called in as this is an additional expense? (NEAT
does not require 100% stipulated turnaround times
for this reason).
Bearing this in mind, MIDS requests that you
support it in providing low and high cost, low and
high

and

examinations to ensure most efficient use of
equipment and staff.
