North Mor Elementary’s Viking Ventures March 2015 A Note from the Principal: Dear North Mor Families: The staff at North Mor wants to thank all of the parents and family members that participated in our spring parent teacher conferences. These conferences are a valuable part of creating a partnership between home and school to ensure that your students are being successful and thriving in their learning. When it comes to communication between home and school, it is important that you first go to your child’s teacher when you have a concern. Although I am more than happy to help when mediation is needed, the relationship between you and your child’s teacher is very important and often times your child’s teacher knows what has happened in the classroom best! SCHOOL GOALS: As we continue to monitor how our students are performing in reading, we have seen many celebrations with over 50 students moving from not proficient to proficient based on their assessments. When you read with your child or listen to them read, you are helping us ensure that all of our students can read proficiently in elementary school. Research has shown that students who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are at much greater risk of dropping out of school later on. We want to make sure that all of our students have the skills they need to become productive citizens and graduate from high school. We held our first parent/principal coffee talk in January and had 14 families attend. The families had an opportunity to ask questions and get clarification on the school and our operations. The questions and feedback helped us to look at areas of the school that might need improvement or more communication about. We will be holding a second coffee talk meeting in March. We would love to have you attend. Please be looking for more information about the date and times in the coming weeks. Have a respectful February, Amy Herrman, Principal Other important information: Please be careful as your drive around North Mor at drop off and pick up times- students are often everywhere and no one wants to see anyone get hurt or have their car hit. Traffic: Student drop off and pick up continues to be a concern, please follow all traffic laws in the school zone. Please stay off of your cell phones Stop for kids in the crosswalk Do not drop students off in the street No U Turns in front of the school Afterschool: Please be sure to pick up students up on time at the end of the day. The new tests from the State of Colorado are called CMAS and PARCC. They will be similar to the TCAP assessments given before but will now be taken by students on the computer. Currently, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are practicing and getting ready for this new assessment. The tests will start the first week of March. It is critical ALL 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are at school every day during the testing window as well as this crucial time before testing begins! This is a very important test that will give us more information on the academic growth that students are making and how we are doing as a school. Some important tips to make testing a success for your child: Make sure they go to bed early. Students need plenty of rest to be able to focus. Make sure they come to school every day! They can’t perform if they aren’t at school. Encourage them to answer every question and to DO THEIR BEST! We will be encouraging students as well during this assessment time. We plan to offer special activities and rewards to students for their efforts. Thanks for your support at North Mor!
