Update from William: he attended the RSS Board Meeting and requested that the existing Competencies
document be sunset. RSS Board approved the motion.
Discussion of Competencies document--approaches for revision
History: Emilie Smart divided document into two: front line reference vs. management of reference
It was suggested that we look at other RUSA documents for guidance (as an aid).
•
Procedures for updating Competencies:
William will send Emilie's revision to committee members
William will send almost approved version of the Guidelines to MOR (new remembers)
William will send Kathleen's Kluegel's email (from Larayne) to MOR (new remembers)
William will send Jo Bell Whitlatch's email about Competencies to MOR (new members)
William will finish minutes and send out
William will update roster, as needed (see new roster)
•
Mechanics of how to go about revision: do we prefer to use
Google documents; Blackboard Collaborate; Conference call; Skype; ALA Connect.
Sally will see what works for the Committee.
Discussion of Professional Competencies vs. Guidelines for Behavioral Performance: how much
overlap is acceptable. How do the two documents relate to each other.
Getting started discussion:
1. Review Emilie's document. is this the correct division?
2. Take a macro look at document. What's missing?
3. Review existing competencies.
4. Define competencies.
5. Possibly contact original authors to learn about charge/origins (see Larayne's e-mail to/from Kathleen
Kluegel
6. Consider not using the word competencies.
7. Identify the elements that go into managing a reference service?
8. Take a look at job postings--is there a framework in the posting that describes what a new reference
manager needs?
Discussed whether it needs to be revised or a new document created. The existing document isn't really
about competencies unique to reference librarians. Rather than competencies, is the term roadmap
more accurate. Identify what goes into managing reference services?
Assignments for Committee members:
•
Robyn: look at LLAMA competencies
•
Lois: ACRL documents
•
Sally: RUSA documents
•
All: review existing document
We should consider scheduling a discussion session at Conference on reference management that might
inform this process.
Meeting adjourned, 11:45.
