SCHOOL ROMAN INVENTIONS DISTRICT 43 (COQUITLAM) 2 Yoonha ROMAN INVENTIONS In this unit you will learn about a few useful inventions created by romans. From farming tools to heating systems all of these innovative creations have significance in the history of Rome. Pay attention to the unit because there is a test at the end! 2 Vallus The roman vallus was used to harvest crops easily (Such as barley or wheat). The vallus was pushed by a Donkey/Mule and the blades at the front of the vallus would cut and move the crops to the hopper behind. The Construction The Groma The groma was a construction tool that was used to sight out straight lines by using the plumb bogs attached to the string. The Wooden Crane The wooden crane helped the romans by lifting heavy objects, too heavy for humans to carry high places. Some cranes were powered by a treadmill similar to a hamster wheel. The weight of a few romans in the treadmill is enough to lift the object. Sometimes the romans will pull on a rope to use the crane. 2015 Yoonha & Evan ROMAN INVENTIONS CONCRETE Roman Structures (i.e. Coliseum, Pantheon, etc…) were always made by the roman concrete. The concrete could endure chemical decay and last a long time (In fact, it last so long some structures of Rome are still here today). The Romans started to use the concrete 2,100 years ago. Roman builders also found a concrete that went hard under water useful for docks and harbors. AQUEDUCT Roman aqueduct is a roman invention, and is used to transport water through an obstacle (shown on right). Roman aqueducts helped roman for public baths, public toilets, sewage systems, fountains and ornate, and to mostly carry water along stone. This aqueduct is so good, it is still used TODAY. DEFINITION: Aqueduct is a type of bridge built to move water. Romans used this aqueduct so much to move water in a distance. DID YOU KNOW? That there is a myth that the city of Rome was created by two brothers that were living along a riverside? 2015 Yoonha & Evan ROMAN INVENTIONS Inventors of Rome Board Games of Rome The romans usually copied the works of other countries but never gave credit. According to the romans, what was made in Rome is the invention of Rome, even the idea of the gods. When the romans heard about the Greek gods, they changed the names and gave few personalities of romans and insisted that they were their gods all along. But of course, it wasn’t. But the romans did have their inventions, actual inventions like the aqueduct, roman concrete, the groma, etc… The Roman board games include Knucklebones, Dice, Roman Chess, Petteia, Latrunculi, Roman Checkers, The Game of Twelve Lines, The Game of Lucky Sixes, Tic-TacToe, Roman Backgammon, and References. Knucklebones The Hypocaust The romans used the hypocaust to get heat in the room. They would light the fire beside the house and the heat would travel underneath the room and heat the room. (Picture on the right) DID YOU KNOW? That the hypocaust is used in other countries like ( For example: ) South Korea? ( Knucklebone too ) 2015 Yoonha & Evan ROMAN INVENTIONS Julius Calendar 50 Julius Caesar aligned the calendar to the solar time. The Julius calendar lengthened the year by ten days. (355-365) The calendar was almost perfect except that it was miscalculated by 11 minutes. It doesn’t seem like a lot but it threw the days of weeks. Show What You Know 1.
