Nominations will be evaluated in one of two categories (please select one category): Senior Scholar – This category includes faculty members who have compiled a substantial and continuing record of outstanding research and scholarly activity. Junior Scholar – This category includes faculty members who, by virtue of the exceptional quality of their early contributions, have demonstrated great potential as scholars. (Candidates must be 12 years or less beyond their highest earned degree.) Please submit this seven-page nomination form and the nominee’s curriculum vitae in either PDF or Word format. The evaluation committee is comprised of prior distinguished research awardees from a range of University departments. Please complete this form so that scholars from unrelated disciplines can appreciate the nominee’s contributions. THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS IS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2013. 1. Nominees in the senior scholar category should possess a substantial and continuing record of outstanding research and scholarly activity in their field and have profoundly contributed to their field in a professional capacity. Nominees in the junior scholar category should have demonstrated great potential as scholars by virtue of the exceptional quality of their early contributions. State briefly the outstanding qualifications of the nominee in the appropriate category, including reference to the nominee’s goals and potential for future scholarly accomplishments. 2 2. Present a brief biographical sketch of the nominee, including evidence of the candidate’s status in his or her field of scholarly activity. Please cite significant professional recognitions, honors, and leadership roles in relevant national and international organizations, as appropriate. 3 3. Briefly describe the nominee’s impact on his or her department or the University, including intellectual stimulation and development of colleagues and students and influence on the excellence and the creativity of research and other scholarly activities of the department or the University. 4 4. Please list students directed to graduate degrees so that the impact of the nominee on graduate education may be assessed (especially for senior scholar nominees). Include references to dissertations (dates and titles), performances, or exhibitions (citing the year of achievement), current position, and accomplishments for up to five students. 5 5. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research will solicit letters of recommendation from national and international leaders in the nominee’s field. Please provide a list of five potential referees to whom we may write. Referees must be external to the University of Pittsburgh. Please include the referees’ complete current addresses (including zip codes), e-mail addresses, and fax numbers. Indicate the standing that each potential referee holds in the nominee’s field, such as fellow status, national prizes and awards, or offices in professional organizations. Discuss relevant professional relationships that these individuals may have had with the nominee. 6 6. Cite and briefly document the nominee’s three scholarly achievements that you consider to be most important. Do not submit copies or originals of scholarly works or creative output. Summaries should include lists of scholarly works, such as refereed journal articles (indicate co-authors in sequence, along with the journal volume and page), books and book chapters, artistic or creative works, invited papers at national and international conferences, honors held, notable exhibitions or performances, grants received, and postdoctoral fellows who have worked with the candidate. 7
