Covenant Highlights United Covenant Church Volume 35, Issue 3 January 2015 PASTOR’S CORNER We always begin the New Year with a week of prayer. This year is no exception. Throughout my years of ministry, wherever I have been this is the practice of all the churches I have been in. I understand why. Everything goes better with prayer. Perhaps that is why the apostle Paul gives the following instructions to the church: “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. “And always pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:18 we read that even the Lord Jesus found it necessary to spend time in prayer. Luke 5:16 says: “But Jesus often withdrew to solitary places and prayed.” If Jesus spent time in prayer, obviously we need to as well. I encourage you to take time to pray. If you can come to one of the prayer gatherings please do. If you can’t pray where you are. Anyone can find it challenging to spend time in prayer. Life is so busy and filled with many responsibilities and activities. But remember, every human being is allotted the same amount of time. We all have 24 hours a day. How we choose to spend it is up to us. Set some time aside to pray. I will say it again; everything goes better when we commit it to God in prayer. Pray for God’s blessing on all the ministries of the church in 2015. Pray that God will send revival and renewal to our church. Pray that there will be more healings, deliverances and salvations this year. Pray for more babies. Pray for the church’s staff. Pray for the youth. Pray for Mighty Oaks. Pray for Lake Beauty Bible Camp. Pray for the leadership team. Pray for people with health problems, and pray for older people who have a hard time getting out. There are many more things to pray about. And don’t forget to thank God for the many answers to prayer. Just Pray. Pastor Dan Pearson A YOUTH MOMENT A wise person once told me that time is funny – the older you are, the faster it goes! I have come to believe that as I cannot believe 2014 has already come and gone and here we sit, at the cusp of 2015! The end of 2014 reminded my family of how fragile life is and that time is fleeting. But rather than respond to this truth with hopelessness like some do or by frantically trying to “live” as much as possible by participating in the world’s pleasures, we, as Christians, are called to a different response! Colossians 4:5 says “Be wise in how you act towards outsides, making the most of every opportunity.” God calls us to recognize the fleeting nature of time as a call to urgency to share Christ with others. To speak when we normally would remain silent. To act when we would have remained still. To be Christ to a world that is lost and hurting. My prayer for 2015 is that we, as the church, would seize the day and be a light in the darkness that the lost may find their way home! Reminder: All normal church activities will resume on Sunday, January 11th and Wednesday, January 14th. Sunday schedule will once again be Mighty OAKS & Senior High at 8:15; Pre – Confirmation, Confirmation and Adults at 8:30 and worship service at 10 a.m. The 25th is a potluck Sunday so please plan to stay for that! Colossians 1:3 “We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,” Camp Promo Sunday – Leland Sheneberger will be visiting our church on Sunday, March 8th to share with us all of the exciting opportunities that Lake Beauty has in store for 2015! During the education hour, the whole church will join together in the sanctuary to sing camp songs, learn about various upcoming camping opportunities and more! Following the service, there will be a delicious dinner served by the youth as a fundraiser for our wonderful camp scholarship. As we look at the New Year and we admit how quickly time passes us by, my prayer is that our response would be one of urgency. Urgency to share the gospel with those who are lost and hurting. Urgency to share love with those who need it most. May we respond to the passing of time by seizing every opportunity we have to share the only hope this world will ever know! May 2015 be known as the year the Church rose and stood and changed the world for the Kingdom of God. I'm glad that those going through hard times have help waiting, and they are willing to receive. Those that are on one or more of the lists are also waiting, and willing to give. They are able to use their gifts with purpose! We would love however, to lengthen our lists so "many hands make light work." This ministry is not done by rotation. It is completely voluntary, so when you are informed that someone is in need, you see if it works for your schedule, and just provide when you can. My intent with having a longer list of people is so those of us involved will not feel pressured. My hope is that we will not consider this as just another responsibility, but a privilege and blessing to serve our Lord. When you go to register online, be sure to check the "Family Camps and Events" box, which will allow you to see the Snowmobile Retreat option.
