Guide to accessing support We know that the process of getting support in place, especially the Disabled Students’ Allowance can be a bit confusing. Hopefully this worksheet will help you see where you are in the process, what you and your Disability Advisor need to do and how far you have left to go! Appointment 1st appointment Complete initial paperwork Discuss impact of condition/disability Screening for dyslexia? What next? We are unable to progress your support until we have suitable medical evidence or a psychologists’ report. What you need to do Provide medical evidence/any other requested information Or: Provide Psychologists’ report Or: Obtain diagnostic assessment via psychologist at UWIC If you need a Psychologists’ report You can apply to the Financial Contingency Fund (FCF) for a contribution towards the cost of a dyslexia assessment. The Disability Advisor will be able to give you more information about this and guide you through the process. Once we have confirmed funding for the assessment we will be in touch to offer you an appointment. Disability Advisor sends initial information to your Programme Director, Academic Registry and the library. Disability Advisor sends a letter to your funding body to initiate the process of applying for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) if appropriate. We will be in touch when there is an appointment available for your Needs Assessment The Assessor will send you a draft of the Needs Assessment report within 10 working days Return FCF application forms and evidence as requested Once you have your psychologists’ report/medical evidence (If you have had a psychologists report at UWIC we will contact you asking you to make an appointment to discuss it) Once you receive approval for a Needs Assessment from your funding body Needs Assessment Appointment to discuss your Needs Assessment (you will be sent a letter asking you to attend this shortly after your Needs Assessment) Information is sent to your Programme Director and Academic Registry notifying them of any support that you require including additional exam arrangements Confirm you can attend any offered appointment with a Psychologist. (see web page regarding DSA) Let us know when you receive approval/any other information from your funding body.
