ROCKET SCENERY LTD Job Description: Scenic Artist Company Outline Since Rocket Scenery Ltd was first launched in 1999, we have developed a reputation for high-quality, beautifully finished theatre scenery. Based near the city centre of Nottingham, our 2475 sq metres of workshops have seen the creation of sets for theatres up and down the UK and overseas. Scenery is constructed in the metal shop and wood shop and then is passed on to the Paint Shop department for finishing. The paint shop at Rocket comprises of the main space which includes a paint bridge and a satellite space next door for floors and other scenery. Job purpose The role of Scenic Artist is to work closely with Head of Paintshop and other scenic artists to produce high quality painted scenery for all clients. The scenic artist is required to accomplish a variety of texture, paint effects and finishes to translate the designer's vision into reality (within budget and on time!) Principal Duties and Responsibilities To be able to interpret designers' small-scale ideas and drawings, and develop them into full-scale reproductions, often improving on the design during the process. To have a good knowledge of scenic painting techniques including layout, colour mixing and paint application skills. To be able to paint scenery and cloths in a timely but durable manner that maintains and develops Rocket Scenery’s high reputation. To use a broad range of scenic techniques and materials. To keep up to date with techniques and styles and to use them within the work of the paintshop. To hang and paint scenic cloths using projection and measuring out and creating cut cloth effects. To work with other departments; liaising on materials, schedules and construction techniques. To assist in the maintenance and safe use of paint shop equipment (Paint Frame, Spray Gun, Airless Sprayer, Compressor). To handle scenic painting materials safely; adhering to strict health and safety guidelines (COSHH), and ensure good housekeeping in the workshop and storage areas at all times. To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the function of the job. Due to the nature of this post, a flexible approach to hours will be necessary and will include evening and weekend work. Person Specification ESSENTIAL To have the traditional fine arts skills of sketching, rendering, and painting 2+ years experience working in a similar environment Be resourceful and offer creative solutions to realise a design Work efficiently with self motivation and flexibility Be able to maintain a professional yet friendly rapport with designers and production managers Have excellent attention to detail and quality control Be able to work under pressure and have an understanding of the demands of the industry eg Sunday Paintcalls and occasional working overnight Be able to work independently, but also as part of a team, and to deadlines Be able to work at height on ladders, access platforms and paint bridge and be fit as the role of scenic artist requires involves some manual handling DESIRABLE Have completed a degree or similar in Scenic Arts Be computer literate especially with image editing programmes Resourceful in sourcing materials and visual references Clean driving licence 21.9.15 HS
