Since Rocket Scenery Ltd was first launched in 1999, we have developed a reputation for highquality, beautifully finished theatre scenery. Based near the city centre of Nottingham,
our 2475 sq metres of workshops have seen the creation of sets for theatres up and down the
UK and overseas. Rocket Scenery has three separate but adjoining workshops for Metal,
Wood and Paint and is equipped with spray booth, CNC router and paint frame.
Job purpose
The role of Scenic Carpenter is to work under the supervision of the Wood shop Supervisor
and alongside other scenic carpenters to produce high quality scenery for our diverse client
base.
They will be required to use a range of equipment, skills and materials to construct and finish
a variety of large and small scale scenic items to the highest of standards for finishing by the
Paint shop, before delivery to the venue.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

To be able to read and build accurately from Autocad drawings, sometimes with
reference to a designer’s model.

To be able to build scenery in a timely but durable manner that maintains and
develops Rocket Scenery’s high reputation.

To use a broad range of construction techniques and materials including but not
limited to timber, sheet material, biwall plastics, laminates, vac form, canvas, serge etc

To keep up to date with techniques and materials and to use them within the work of
the Wood shop.

To work with other departments; liaising on materials, schedules and construction
techniques.

To assist in the maintenance and safe use of wood shop equipment

To handle materials and adhesives safely; adhering to strict health and safety
guidelines (COSHH), and ensure good housekeeping in the workshop and storage
areas at all times.
- To undertake any other duties which are consistent with the function of the job.
The nature of the job might involve some work beyond the core workshop hours, occasionally
in the evenings and at weekends, as well as some on-site work during the fit-up period.
Person Specification
ESSENTIAL
-
At least two years experience working in a similar workshop environment
-
Ability to work accurately and with attention to detail
-
Ability to work efficiently with self motivation and flexibility
-
Be able to work independently, but also as part of a team, and to deadlines
-
Be able to work at height on ladders, access platforms and paint bridge and be
physically fit as the role of scenic carpenter will require manual handling
DESIRABLE
-
Fit Up experience
-
Knowledge of technical theatre, engineering or electrical experience
-
Clean driving licence
