This so called “polar vortex” that is pushing the cold temperatures into our backyard is not just a winter storm but it’s the coldest temperatures some states have seen in 20 years. So, remember to bundle up with plenty of layers as it could just be twenty below! The time has come and the Winter Olympic athletes are ready to compete. We will have several of our own events, but they won’t include the frigid air that Sochi has to offer. Our events will include winter Wii bowling with qualifying rounds, freestyle shuffle board, biathlon bubble gum blowing, and the front lobby short track trivia. We will also watch the opening ceremonies and learn the rich history of the Winter Olympic Games. If you venture out with us this month you will have the opportunity to visit Horigans Pub for lunch, Libs Supper Club for dinner, Beeman’s in Sayre, PA, and, Spencer’s Restaurant in Corning, NY. As always, we continue to offer transportation to the Jubilee grocery store on Mondays, Wegmans and local banks on Tuesdays, Wal-Mart on Wednesdays, and monthly visits to the consumer square locations on Thursdays. Please see Marcie or Caitlin if you have further questions or suggestions on the scheduled transportation During Tuesday evening history classes, Mary will touch upon African American arts, culture, religion, music, ancestry, and the origin of soul food as a tie into Black History Month. We will also have the pleasure of watching our very own resident, Alice Ballard; impersonate the historical figure. Mary Jemison who was captured by a group of Native Americans in the 1750’s. She married into the Indian tribe and was known as “the white woman of the Senecas”. Mary is buried in Letchworth State Park where a statue has been erected in her memory. Calling All Bridge Players Who “Used to Play” For all those residents who used to play bridge now is your chance to freshen up on your skills! We will welcome Pat Statelmeir on February 25th for a “Bridge Refresher Course” for any residents who would like to pick-up the game again. This will be a very casual gathering where you can ask questions and feel at ease while learning the game. If you’d like to participate please sign-up during the first two weeks of February. If we have enough interest our goal will be to start a beginner’s bridge group. The World’s Greatest Geological Wonders On Mondays at 1:00 PM learn about some of the spectacular sites around the world including Mount Fuji, Galapagos Rift, African Rift Valley, The Grand Canyon, The Himalayas, and The Amazon Basin just to name a few. These wonders of the world are sure to enlighten you.
