Final draft Job Code 063840 Effective Date 06/18/2014 Description Zoo Aquatic LSS Specialist Original Date Revision Date Essential Operates and maintains Zoo life support systems including marine Functions mammal, penguin, hippopotamus and other aquatic life water systems; chilled saltwater and freshwater pools Performs routine mechanical installations and repairs Troubleshoots equipment and systems Examples Of UNDER ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISION Work Operates, monitors, troubleshoots marine mammal water quality, life support systems and exhibit water features equipment Enforces safety procedures to insure safe operation of equipment and employee safety Monitors inventory levels and orders parts, supplies, equipment, and materials Implements and enforces the preventive maintenance program, and coordinates and schedules equipment maintenance Performs sand filtration, pool volume and filter surface area calculations, and pool turnover rate calculations Operates, maintains pumps, actuators, valves, filters, ozone generation systems, foam fractionators, electric motors, electrical and electromechanical controls, reverse osmosis and LSS automated control systems Interprets construction blueprints and drawings Works with and coordinates contractors Backwashes and maintains high rate sand filters Monitors heater and chiller equipment Adjusts equipment and chemicals to ensure water quality maintains compliance with USDA Animal Welfare Act (AWA) Marine Mammal Care Standards and AZA standards Conducts and interprets water quality tests and analyzes data Uses electrical testing and water quality equipment including calibration and replacement of ORP and flow sensors and ultrasonic water level transmitters Generates and maintains log sheets, prepares reports and maintains records and files Cleans, maintains and replaces motors, bearings and other frictional wearing surfaces Performs related work Physical Requirement and Working Conditions Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds Lifts and carries items weighing over 50 pounds in a team setting Must work a varied schedule Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements Operates tools and equipment and works in confined spaces Climbs a ladder and works at heights up to 40 feet Must have sufficient hearing and sight to observe activities, equipment and environment and to recognize and take action in the interest of the safety of zoo guests and employees Works around moving parts, carts, or machines, and irritant chemicals Spends prolonged periods of time sitting, standing, walking, carrying, stooping and climbing Minimum Bachelor’s degree Requirements Aquatic Science Biological Science Marine Biology Related field Three years of aquarium or marine mammal life support system operating experience Other Minimum Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA Requirements Must be on 24 hour call Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license Equivalency An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted Special Must be certified in Scuba Open Water, regulated by the National Requirements Association Underwater Instructions, or obtain within nine months of employment Skills and Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision Abilities Ability to work well as part of a team Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions in accordance with applicable regulations and established policies and procedures Ability to operate a personal computer and other office equipment Ability to train personnel Competency Salary NU / 09 Plan/Grade Wage and Hour Non-Exempt EEO4 7 / Skilled Craft
