Keep Virginia Beautiful Mike Baum 804-665-2908 www.keepvirginiabeautiful.org Natura Wines Partners with Keep Virginia Beautiful to Bring Beauty and Vibrancy to Powhatan State Park Partnership Focuses on Shared Values of Environmental Responsibility and Respect for Nature October 20, 2014 – Natura Wines, produced by Emiliana Organic Vineyards, the world’s leading organic winery, and Keep Virginia Beautiful are working together on planting native trees at Powhatan State Park. A partnership between Natura and national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful (KAB), which builds and sustains vibrant communities, includes a grant for Keep Virginia Beautiful’s project. The Natura grant will provide funding for planting 10 large native Virginia trees in an open field at Powhatan State Park to help establish a wildlife corridor for local inhabitants to allow a covered/protected crossing to the other side of the park. Additionally, the oaks, maples, birches and dogwoods that were planted will provide beauty and shade to the park visitors for many years to come. "We are extremely grateful to Natura Wines for this opportunity to help create wildlife habitat and sustainable beauty at Virginia's newest State Park", said Michael Baum; Executive Director of Keep Virginia Beautiful. “Natura’s consumers are engaged and aware. They make mindful, meaningful decisions,” says Lauren Marano, brand manager for Natura Wines. “They also have a love of the outdoors and an appreciation for a pure lifestyle. The connection with Keep Virginia Beautiful is a natural fit.” As part of the Natura and KAB partnership, select KAB community-based affiliates will focus on local beautifying and “greening” projects, storm water management projects, and improving the overall vibrancy of outdoor spaces. Most of these projects will emphasize native plantings, which aligns with Natura and Emiliana’s philosophy in the vineyards. The biodiversity of native trees and flowers is fundamental to Emiliana, as native plantings are naturally more resistant to weather and water conditions, protect the land against erosion, and help to reforest the estate. “In our effort to build and sustain vibrant communities, it’s increasingly important that we focus on the planting of more ecologically appropriate native species,” said Jennifer Jehn, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. “Keep America Beautiful’s partnership with Natura will help us toward that end as we bring people together to transform public places into beautiful spaces.” Additionally, Keep Virginia Beautiful would like to thank Watkins Nurseries in Midlothian, VA for providing reduced pricing and free delivery in order to maximize the number of trees and to the Friends of Powhatan State Park for providing the labor and planting for this project.
