Game Room Specialist Time Working with the Y Leadership Training The years I have spent working with the YMCA community began with a leadership program my freshman year of school. The program instilled essential values to be successful in improving the surrounding community as a future leader. YMCA promotes a healthy spirit, body, and mind, and provides many with a guideline for future endeavors. Junior Basketball Counselor Following my year as a successful leader in training, I secured a position as a Basketball Counselor who (with the assistance of a Senior Advisor) created drills, conditioning, and skills essential to the sport. The camp was open to all ages, so the activities had to be split accordingly by height and age. Camp at the YMCA Topanemus runs nine weeks, which I worked all of. After my first year doing basketball, I took a dramatic turn in my position at the YMCA by accepting a position as a Specialist. These are some of the only individuals on the property given long-range walkies in order to relay important information and be available for emergency. As the game room specialist, I was mostly responsible for coming up with challenges and tournaments for the campers. These could range from physical sport challenges, to mental tournaments such as chess. Being a promoter of health and exercise science, I was equipped with a cooler full of pre prepared meals every day. I spread my influence and knowledge onto campers, and would occasionally bring in recipes if requested. Camper motivated to zip line for first time Senior Counselor My recent several years at the YMCA Camp Topanemus have been as a Senior Counselor for grades 6-8. I monitor them throughout the day, and on Thursday we would take a bus to various locations around the area. I was always influential upon nutritional options during these trips, and encouraged my campers to bring lunch rather than buy fast food and ice cream. Having worked here for almost 5 years, I have formed a bond with nearly 100 campers. These campers have a certain trust formed with me where they mimic and reflect my actions to their own behavior. I wish to continue implementing Leadership skills and corrective life habits in a future career in the field of Physical Therapy. Functional Movement Analysis Junior year of college I was involved in a semester long assessment of my personal body functionality in terms of range of motion, gait analysis, and overall kinetic motion. Numerous tests were used in the process, and there was an analysis of physically impairing medical conditions that may affect results. By the end of an overhead squat assessment, gait analysis, and other range of motion exams, I was able to diagnose myself with an excessive lordosis of the lumbar spine. I was also able to discover limits to internal rotation and flexion of my right shoulder complex. To remedy the problems, it was part of my studies to construct a corrective program for my impairments. My excessive lordosis could be tracked back to improper core workout during grade school that put stress on my illiopsoas. Exercises to fix the problem include planks, reverse leg curls, and core stabilizing exercises incorporating balance.
