Match Review – 4 May 2014 U12s – Round 2 Eastern Lions SC V East Kew JFC (7-3) Loss This week saw the team travel to Easter Lions home ground in Burwood. It was cold, it was windy and rain squalls peppered the boys throughout the day. The first half started well with an early goal to Lucas Sirianos and looked to be the start of a good day. Unfortunately Eastern Lions had other ideas and piled on the next 6 goals. The team welcomed the arrival of Thierry for the second half; unfortunately he was hampered by car troubles. Thanks to the RACV for quickly getting the Boultadakis family mobile again!! The boys in the second half played with much more poise and purpose and threatened the goals repeatedly. Coach Con was pleased with the effort in the second half as we won the half by 2 goals to 1. Jamison slotted two lovely running goals to add some respectability to the 7 / 3 score-lines. We look forward to round 3 to pick up from our much improved second half. Well done boys! Go Panthers! U12s – Round 2 East Kew JFC V Doncaster Rovers SC (2-0) WIN Hosting the local visitors Doncaster Rovers this week, East Kew JFC were keen to register their first win in the U12s competition, following last week’s narrow and unlucky loss. With Adam’s return to Centre Back, our defence appeared solid on paper once again. The boys put a great effort at training this week, focusing on through balls, blocking the opposition’s path to goal, keeping ball possession and on their explosive take-offs (short sprints). With the assistance of Rino (Daniel/Michael’s dad), the boys arrived early and began warming up exercises to prevent any surprise attacks this week early in the game. The warm up paid off… On a cold and wet day, like “startled gazelles” our boys engaged into action. Our captain Tim and Max combined to break through the middle and generate a pass for young Daniel, who delivered the first successful strike for East Kew at the 4’ mark – to make the score 1-0. Four minutes later, Daniel’s second shot was saved by the keeper. At the 9’, Tim had an opportunity to increase our lead from close range, but drove the ball into the keeper. Soon after, Max’s attempted strike at goal went narrowly wide, sending a message to the Doncaster defence to be weary… Dylan and Michael defended our full back positions with poise, and generated ongoing passes into our midfield. Nikitas and Adam combined well to block the path of any prospective attack that Doncaster could create. Isaac, Sebastian, Antony and Eamon, engaged from the flanks, closing the opposition, forcing them into errors and releasing balls to the boys up front. East Kew’s pressure and running forced the visitors on the back foot, generating 6 corners in the first half. Two corners were very dangerous, with the ball floating across goal, but without result. In the middle, Ryan ran his legs off as usual, controlling the balance of play, exchanging passes with everyone around him. At 16’ Max (who was making excellent runs all day) attempted a long shot but did not quite connect in the wet. A minute later, a great opportunity arose, but the keeper foiled him again from close range. At 19’ Tim cleverly assisted Daniel once again with a through ball, who smashed the ball into the top right hand corner of the opposition goal, from just inside the area – increasing our lead to 2-0. Doncaster made one attempt in the first half to score, but Amaan’s safe hands kept them goal less. 2-0 at half time… Doncaster increased the pressure in the 2nd half, and following a corner, a strike for goal was saved by Amaan at 28’ – keeping his clean sheet for the day. After that, any forward movements from Doncaster were checked by Adam, and cleaned up (swept) by Nikitas clinically. Soon after, Max received a delightful through ball from Antony, who struck it perfectly, but the visiting keeper pulled off the best save of the day to parry it wide. Sebastian and Isaac continued to win the flanks, perfectly controlling the ball and passing through balls. Eamon blocked their midfielders endlessly and tackled hard as usual. Two more shots by Daniel were saved again by the opposition keeper at 39’, whist East Kew maintained pressure all over the park. At the 50’ Max brilliantly got away from their defence, struck a beautiful curved shot past the keeper, but it exploded on the Doncaster post. The boys were delightful to watch this week and really enjoyed their first win – deservedly so… Next week we travel to Ringwood for a 9:00am game, (who won 12-0 in their first round). We will be without our star midfielder Ryan, so it will be all hands on deck to cover for him. As always we look forward to our next challenge…! Congratulations boys!!! Out: none U13s – Round 2 East Kew JFC V Glen Waverley SC Blue (5-2) WIN “The skies were dark and gloomy, raining on/off throughout the morning. It was an uninviting stage for the under 13 East Kew Panthers 2nd round. East Kew's spirits were dampened and it showed in our performance during the first half. We were having trouble controlling the ball in the wet conditions and eventually it resulted in two goals hitting the back of the net. The boys huddled together under umbrellas and listened to Paul in the hope of lifting our spirits. Back onto the pitch, spirits lifting with the weather. Early into the second half the boys were really pressing hard and due to our hunger for the win we snapped up the opportunities presented to us to level the game 2-2. From here we had the taste of blood and were hammering shots at the opposition’s goals. With the finish line in sight we put the game to bed scoring another 3 goals (Yes three). With an array of scorers, the boys performed very well in all aspects of the game, defensively and offensively. A great end to the match and another win under our belt…” by Ben Davis (Captain) Following a straight forward win last week, and with Connor absent at full back this week, East Kew warmed up quietly prior to the game. With lots of talent from the U12s volunteering to help our boys, Dylan took on the responsibility of playing left back for the team, after playing a full game, and he was brilliant!!! Within the first 19’ minutes of the game, East Kew dominated the play. At 3’ Taigh tested their keeper, who saved with ease. A minute later, it was Matt who fired a shot, but the keeper remained resilient. At the 6’ mark, Che brilliantly dazzled their midfielders but shot wide from a wide angle. Tim and Arjun worked the midfield, but our passes were blocked. Our movement was intermittent and we could not break through the opposition’s defence. At 19’ a penetrating through ball enabled Glen Waverley to strike first, giving Ben S no chance – 0-1. A minute later, following a scramble in our area, Glen Waverley startled us with a second goal – it was now 0-2. In disbelief, the boys attempted to get back into the game, but the opposition “walled” their defence and midfield effectively. Jeremy ran all day on the wing, creating opportunities, chasing players down in a gallant attempt to lift his team. 0-2 at half time… At half time, the boys were reminded by their coaches of their capability, their hard work at training and were asked to lift their intensity. They all agreed and put behind a mediocre first half with a desire to make a difference. Within 5’, Matthias cleverly poached a free ball in their area to reduce the deficit to 1-2. Two minutes later, Matthias earns “legendary” status, and buries another goal to level the game at 2-2. Spirits lifted. Daniel was asked to come on to generate some havoc in their defence. At 36’ following a gorgeous through ball by Tim (working hard in the middle), Daniel put us ahead – 3-2. Arjun, Vilhelm and Che were now dominating the midfield and the flanks. At the 40’ Jeremy who ran all day, creating chances, brilliantly chips the Glen Waverley keeper from the left wing to make it 4-2. Jamie and Dylan held the visiting wingers at bay, with solid tackles and excellent distribution to our midfielders. Ben, remained a tower of strength at centre back, with strong tackles using his body to physically block their path to our goal. Zac at sweeper cleaned up any lose balls elegantly, leaving Ben S with little to do all half. Max and Adam came on and Taigh was asked to menace their midfield with this speed – and he did not let the coaches down. At the 40’ Max cleverly drove the ball into the Glen Waverley goal to seal the fate of the opposition for the day. It was a glorious victory, coming back from 0-2 down, to remain equal first on the ladder. Next week, we are at home to Croydon and look forward to hold on to the top spot in the league, with another win…A terrific team effort!!! Out: Connor U14s – Round 2 East Kew JFC V Ashburton United SC Green (13-0) WIN With the weather improving by midday, East Kew JFC U14s, following some intense training this week, appeared very focused prior to the game against visiting Ashburton SC Green. The stage was set and although the rain moved on to the northern suburbs of Melbourne, at 12:33pm EST, it suddenly began “raining goals” at Hislop Reserve in Balwyn!!! Within 3’ of the game, a splendid pass from Jack St found Stefan who struck the ball into the visitor’s net to open the score – 1-0. At 6’ Jorge’s strike is blocked by Ashburton defenders, and sensing a great day ahead, Stefan scored again to increase our lead to 2-0. Soon after, a sweeping corner from Matt S is headed by Jorge onto the Ashburton cross bar with a crashing sound, sending a clear message to the opposition…At 9’ Jorge receives a pass from Stefan, and handsomely opens his account for the day to make it 3-0, with a great finish. At 10’ Stefan’s shot is saved by the keeper who found himself in the correct position for a change. However, a minute later Matt L worked the ball through to Stefan, and this time he completed his “hat-trick” to make it 4-0. At 12’ Ben worked his way down the right wing, dribbling opponents with ease and accurately crossing the ball to Matt S, for an easy tap-in goal, to increase our lead to 5-0. At 15’ Ben repeats his great achievements on the right, and pin points Dermot with a low cross on the far post, to further increase our lead to 6-0, with a delightful placed shot. A minute later, Ben’s accurate shot is saved by the keeper. At 20’, another beautiful corner delivered by Matt S, finds Dermot in the area who in “mid-flight”, heads the ball perfectly into the net, for his 2nd goal, to make it 7-0. Three minutes later, long shots from Stefan, Jack Sa and Dermot narrowly miss the target to increase the score line further. With the game won by half time, the coaches (who were pleasantly surprised at the score line) decided to rest some players and experiment players in new positions, trialling different team plays in the 2nd half. Around the 35’ Jorge, Stefan and Jack St bombarded the Ashburton goals which were either saved or narrowly wide. Under pressure, the ball was not cleared by the Ashburton defence from another dangerous corner by Matt S, and at 40’ captain Jimmy registered his first goal for the season from close range with a thunder strike – it is now 8-0. At 41’ Stefan convincingly beats the defender in the area, but narrowly shoots over the top corner. At 42’ Matt S shoots just wide from a loose ball. Luke, Aleksandrs, Nik, James and Jimmy tackled and over ran the opposition with ease, producing a very light day at the office for goalkeeper Steve, allowing “zero” shots to come his way. At 45’ and 46’ Stefan combines with Jorge through clever 1-2s and through balls, for Jorge to complete his “hat-trick” with two brilliantly constructed goals, and to increase the lead to 10-0. Two minutes later, Jorge pounces on a perfect through ball from Matt S, and drives his 4th goal to increase the score to 11-0. At 50’, Jorge was unlucky not to add the 12th goal to the tally, when he bent a low shot past the keeper, which shook the upright post. Jack St, Matt L, Jack Sa, Matt S and Ben completely dominated the middle and the flanks, tackling, dribbling and creating opportunities for the guys up front all day. Unfinished, Stefan combined using well drilled 1-2s with Jorge and Matt S. to score 5 goals for the day, and to finalise the score line to an overwhelming 13-0. We simply out-classed the opposition this week and deservedly now sit at the top of the ladder. Next week, we host Manningham at home, and plan to increase our lead in the league.
