U11s – Round 1 East Kew JFC V Ashburton (5-3) WIN

The mighty under 11’s have started the year with a fantastic round 1 victory.

The boys played with confidence and control as they put their training into action.

The East Kew under 11’s defeated Ashburton 5 goals to 3.

The goal scorers were as follows; Ben, Alexander, Thierry, Jack & Jamison. A fantastic team effort by the boys, well done!

Go Panthers!!!

U12s – Round 1 East Kew JFC V Monbulk Rangers SC (4-5) Loss

We witnessed an “epic” battle between our brave U12s this week, in a game that could only be described as a

“heavy weight boxing match”…! Each team took their turn scoring a goal on average every 5 minutes! Monbulk surprised us from the outset, but our U12s clawed their way back until half time to be in the game. Monbulk raced away again early in the 2 nd half, but our resilient U12s did not give up and came back to almost equalising and possibly winning the game. Our endurance was brilliant, but we were a little unlucky not scoring all of our opportunities, with the Monbulk keeper saving their team. A “gallant” defeat with tremendous potential!

With our centre back Adam away this week, we had to experiment by placing several players in this key position and

Monbulk exploited this. Monbulk came out firing and within the 1’ surprised us, and we were 0-1 down. However, one minute later young Daniel rocketed the ball into the net from close range, to equalise 1-1. Our midfielders Tim,

Ryan, Isaac, Antony, Eamon regained control of the middle and the match was balanced again. Monbulk had two more chances, but were foiled by Amaam in goals. A little later, the opposition managed to break through again, and increased their lead to 1-3. Our defence re-organised and Dylan joined Nikitas in the middle who held strong till the end of the first half, supported by Michael & Sebastian. The boys up front fired at the Monbulk goals with intensity but their keeper kept well. Just before the end of the half Max got onto a through ball and executed well, to change the score to 2-3 at half time.

Following the restart of the 2 nd half, Monbulk used their fitness to run us down and got another early goal to increase their lead to 2-4, however, again we fought back and within 4 minutes our Captain Tim cleverly put the ball in the net and we stayed in touch at 3-4. Another goal by Monbulk increased their lead to 3-5, but the Panthers did not put their heads down. Our defence and midfield began out-running the opposition, feeding repeated through balls to our strikers. Minutes later Max reduced the deficit to 4-5 and with 10 minutes to go we had an opportunity to win the game. Shots fired from our midfielders and forwards were blocked or narrowly missed their target. It was raining opportunities, but in the end, we ran out of time to change the score line.

The result did not reflect the balance of the game, and the statistics indicate that we should have won the game. It was one game that got away, but we had many positives. East Kew U12s showed that they can come back from any score line and that their fitness enables them to keep fighting until the end. Where most teams would concede defeat, our boys showed their might and rose up to the occasion to almost steal the game back. They kept to their game plan, looking for their team mates and were not afraid to tackle even the bigger opponents.

We are in a league that will challenge us throughout the year, however we believe that this team is more than capable of being competitive and we will be a danger to any future opponent. Looking forward to the game against

Doncaster Rovers next Sunday…

U13s – Round 1 East Kew JFC V Wonga Park Wizards JFC (5-2) WIN

East Kew U13s were magnificent this week, demonstrating a comfortable win over Wonga Park Wizards and securing

2 nd place in the league. The boys, under the leadership of Captain Ben Davis, executed almost all of our match plays with precision and their fitness ensured they were first to the ball and easily out-ran the visitors. Many supporters were in awe watching how they dominated their opponents all over the park, and were unlucky not to score another

3-4 goals.

Within 2 minutes of the start of the game, Matthias got on to an assist by Taigh and drove a thunderbolt in the visitors’ net, disclosing of things to come… Arjun and Tim controlled the midfield from the outset, weaving and dribbling at will, and sending through balls to the boys up front. Four minutes later, Taigh got onto a through ball from Arjun and screamed past the Wonga defence to bury our second goal. Over the next 10 minutes, Jeremy and

Che were menacing on the wings, crossing and shooting at will. Taigh and Matthias up front, rained their shots at goal, but narrowly missed their mark.

Our defenders, Jamie, Connor, Zak and Ben, made it look easy, as they tackled with might, and handsomely distributed passes to our midfielders. It was almost too quiet, when a minor defensive error allowed Wonga to score one back at the 15’ mark. This goal however, woke up “a giant”. Taking back control of the game, Jeremy, Vilhelm,

Che, Tim and Arjun created even more chances for our strikers. The Wonga Park team were pinned in their goal mouth, when Arjun got on to a beautiful ball from Jeremy and increased our lead to 3-1 from close range. Three minutes later, Taigh exploded through their defence and drove another goal to extend our lead to 4-1 by half time.

During the 2 nd half, we comfortably controlled the game, and relaxed a little… Possibly enjoying it too much… The visitors began ascending and our goalkeeper Ben kept them out a couple of times very well. At the 36’ mark, a long range free kick was perfectly struck by the opposition, with little that Ben could do to reach it, reducing the score line to 4-2.

The boys got back in gear, and with some of the U12s assisting off the bench including Dylan and Nikitas, ourU13s began pressuring the Wonga Park goal mouth again, missing great opportunities. Our ball play was fantastic to watch, as we kept looking for our team mates moving the ball around the park with skill and precision. Defensively,

Zak and Ben ensured Ben was not going to be threatened and cleared any chances from the opposition. In the 40’,

Arjun elegantly chips the Wonga goalkeeper from the edge of the area, to score a magnificent goal and sealing the fate of the opposition, 5-2. Over the next 10 minutes, players were moved into different positions for experience and to rest some of the boys who worked so hard in the first half.

Whilst Wonga Park may not be a benchmark team for this league, the execution of their play and obvious high fitness levels, confirms that the U13s Panters will be a force this year, that no opponent can take on lightly. Looking forward to our next Sunday game, against Glen Waverley…

U14s – Round 1 East Kew JFC V Ashburton United SC Yellow (7-3) WIN

Our U14s outclassed Ashburton this week, who to their credit, fought gallantly with a couple of players short. As it sometimes happens in these situations, it took a little while for our team to crank up into high gear, but once they did they were an unstoppable machine!

Whilst both teams felt each other out at the start, it was Dermot at the 6’ mark who managed to cleverly place the ball in the Ashburton net from close range, following a free kick. 1-0. Six minutes later, Matt Smith outrageously chipped a loose ball just inside the area, that travelled high and landed in the goals surprising the visiting goalkeeper

– now it is 2-0. Throughout this period, Aleksandrs and Luke held off any attacks with ease, led by Captain Jimmy and

Nik in the middle.

For the next 15 minutes, most of the play was in the midfield, controlled by Matt L. and Matt S., however our boys could not break through the Ashburton defence. We were holding on to the ball a little longer than required and the turnover was high by both teams. At this point we increased the pressure, began distributing much more accurately, and at the 26’ mark, the Ashburton defence fumbled, and Stefan got onto a loose ball to increase our lead to 3-0. On high adrenalin, the East Kew boys maintained more pressure, and a minute later, a through ball from Matt S. found

Stefan who cleverly shot past the goalkeeper again, 4-0. Just before half time, the Ashburton team struck a free kick that beat Steve with a bouncing shot, to reduce the score line to 4-1 by half time.

During the 2 nd half, East Kew dominated the game for most part, releasing and distributing the balls to each other with much better accuracy. Jack St., Dermot and Jack Sa. won their wings, whilst both Matts took over the midfield.

At the same time, Ashburton lifted for about 10 minutes and intermittently shot at our goals either wide or easily saved by Steve. Within 2 minutes of the start of the half, Jorge exchanged a wonderful 1-2 with Jack St. and slotted the ball past the visiting goalkeeper for the 5 th time. Two minutes later, Stefan received a beautiful square pass from

Dermot, and struck a low shot from the edge of the area to increase the score to 6-1, and to fulfil his “hat-trick”.

Ashburton lifted and fired a couple of shots at Steve, and eventually they managed to chip one over his head to make it 6-2 at the 37’. At this point, our firepower up front continued, but our shots were either wide or saved by the keeper.

At the 42’ Jack St. trapped a loose ball at the edge of the area, and with poise, elegantly chipped the keeper to increase the score to 7-2. With the game won, we continued attacking and Dermot, Stefan, Jorge and Jack St. were unlucky not to score again. The opposition managed to take advantage of a minor confusion in our defence and reduced the score line to 7-3, just before full time.

A very eventful day and our U14s clinched 2 nd spot on the ladder, taking advantage of an opportunity. Good teams do this all the time, and whilst we were challenged for a while, our class was demonstrated on the day. We now look forward to the test that Ashburton Green will provide for us this Sunday.
