Page |1 Joe & Brooke Focus Lesson Plan Learning Outcome/Objective(s): Students will be able to identify first aid wounds, procedures, and to demonstrate first aid care to specific types of injuries using the guidelines of The American Red Cross. Students will be able to define 8-10 terms by following a PowerPoint presentation accompanied with handout to fill in the blanks, and finally grouped with partners to demonstrate proper first aid care with guidance of Mr. Brannigan and Ms. Gallagher. Topic/Concept: First –Aid (Secondary Level) Targeted Skill: To guide students on how to treat the different types of wounds and the proper procedures that follow. Begin by asking students what they know, use of proper vocabulary, and use of examples from the text. Strategy: To activate background knowledge we are going to have two Scenarios that deal with two situations of first aid. One scenario will involve the proper technique, and the other scenario will involve the improper technique. Next we will let the class read each situation and determine which is the best scenario and why. Followed by, a class discussion which Segway’s into our presentation. Materials Needed: Microsoft PowerPoint, Handout, First-Aid kits. Glencoe McGraw Hill, Glencoe Health Student Edition (Secondary). Published 2007 New York, NY. Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RST.9-10.2. Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; trace the text’s explanation or depiction of a complex process, phenomenon, or concept; provide an accurate summary of the text. Applying first-aid procedures can minimize injury and 1 Page |2 Joe & Brooke save lives. 2.1.6.D.4 Assess when to use basic first-aid procedures. 2.1.8.D.4 Demonstrate firstaid procedures, including victim and situation assessment, Basic Life Support, and the care of head trauma, bleeding and wounds, burns, fractures, shock, and poisoning. NETS: 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: A. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. Steps to implementing the strategy: The purpose of this strategy is to see what students know about First-aid by using a reading scenario to activate background knowledge. Next we are to Model a situation or situations where these first aid practices/examples would be helpful as we go through our PowerPoint. During the PowerPoint students will have a handout which follows the PowerPoint; students are to take notes, fill in the blanks, and write examples for terms in their own words or examples from presentation. Guided Practice: Mr. Brannigan and Ms. Gallagher will model an injury situation step by step and model the proper technique of how to treat the wound or injury situation by using the American Red Cross Guidelines. Independent Practice: Students will pick or come up with a scenario or example with a partner (as we did) and treat the injury or wound properly. For this activity students must come up with a situation, identify the wound, and go by first-aid steps to identify the severity of injury, next act to treat wound to best ability or call 9-1-1. If there is enough time we will have students come up and demonstrate their scenario for the class. Assessment: To assess students the criteria we are going to use is 1.observation – Are students following the presentation with the handout, are they filling in answers and examples properly and understand at least 80 percent of terms and visuals. How students work during independent practice; did students properly apply knowledge. During presentation examples call on students 2 Page |3 Joe & Brooke to answer. A formal way to assess is using a grade book or attendance sheet with criteria standards for the day’s lesson as a checklist and mark off students’ progress individually. 3
