WHAT NOT - TO FEED YOUR DOG ! Macadamia Nuts (raw/roasted kernels) Toxic to dogs but not all dogs susceptible. Toxic dose 5-40 kernels for a 20 kg dog. Symptoms: depression, weakness, vomiting, joint pain/swelling, paralysis in hind limbs. Avocado (persin toxin) Toxic to dogs, caged birds, goats, alpacas. The ripe fruit is toxic. Symptoms: sudden death, shortness of breath, coughing, fluid under chin, lack of milk. Onion (cooked or raw) Toxic to cattle, cats, dogs, horses, sheep and goats. Causes breakdown of red blood cells leading to anaemia. Symptoms: blood in urine, off food, weakness, lethargy. Chocolate (theobromine toxin) Toxic to dogs, cats. The more cocoa, the more toxic i.e. dark chocolate is worse than milk chocolate. Causes sudden death during exercise and pancreatitis (due to high fat content). Grapes and Raisins Toxic if eaten in large amounts (56-150g/kg). Symptoms: vomiting (within hours of ingesting), causes long-term kidney problems. Lilies • Toxic to cats if ingested. Causes kidney problems and may be fatal but with aggressive veterinary treatment, cats may recover. High fat snacks Sausages off the BBQ, fatty met, pork crackling etc. Can cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Symptoms: lethargy, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea. Ham Ham skin, bones, pieces. Very high in fat. Can cause Pancreatitis. Symptoms: lethargy, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea. Artificial Sweeteners (Xylitol) Xylitol may be found in such foods as chewing gum, confectionary, medicines and baked goods. Can cause hypoglycaemia and acute liver failure. Symptoms: vomiting, weakness, wobbliness, seizures, death.
