Comprised of artists and guests from five festivals and conferences celebrating singing, fiddle traditions, jazz, writing, and acoustic blues, as well as special performances from the Seattle Symphony and blues icon Taj Mahal, the Centrum summer season features more than 60 events that include a diverse lineup of concerts, club performances, dances and readings. Mainstage performances for all festivals take place at McCurdy Pavilion, a WWI-era dirigible hangar converted into a concert hall, which can be opened for afternoon concerts to allow seating on the wide lawn of Littlefield Green. The grounds open to the public for picnicking one-hour prior to show time, and feature artist merchandise and recordings, as well as a beer garden for patrons 21 and older. Smaller concerts, as well as readings from the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference, take place in the 280-seat Joseph F. Wheeler Theater as well as at intimate club venues in downtown Port Townsend. Dances are located at various venues around Fort Worden State Park. The Seattle Symphony, under the baton of Music Director Gerard Schwarz, opens the 2011 season on Friday, June 17 at 7 PM with a performance at the 1200-seat McCurdy Pavilion. The concert marks the second-to-last concert with Maestro Schwarz, who is stepping down after an illustrious 26-year career, and features a program that includes Dvorak’s New World Symphony, and world premieres from composers Samuel Jones and Philip Glass. The 2011 season also features a performance by Taj Mahal in McCurdy Pavilion on Wednesday, August 3 at 7:30 PM, as part of the Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival. The concert marks the first appearance on the Olympic Peninsula by the two-time Grammy winner in more than 10 years. Centrum’s 2011 season includes two special concerts in association with the National Endowment for the Arts. Jazz Port Townsend and the NEA Jazz Masters Live program presents NEA Jazz Masters Bill Holman, legendary composer/arranger for Stan Kenton, Count Basie, and Buddy Rich, and nine-time Grammy winner clarinetist/saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera, in a new collaboration to be performed by the Centrum Faculty All-Star Big Band at 1:30 PM on Saturday, July 30 at McCurdy Pavilion. Centrum’s “Master Hands Project: NEA National Heritage Award Winners” concert features guitarist Wayne Henderson, fiddler and barn dance caller Dudley Laufman, Cajun master Marc Savoy, Swedish fiddler Paul Dahlin, and Irish fiddler Liz Carroll in an historic celebration of National Heritage honorees and recognized American treasures. The readings and lectures series from the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference, now in its 38th year, features Bob Shacochis, a National Book Award winner, Cate Marvin, whose poetry investigates the role of gender and gender awareness in contemporary American culture; Carl Phillips, whose poetry explores the natural world and issues of family, identity, and community; and Pam Houston, a novelist and short-story writer whose work takes on a “Western” theme as she writes about the lives of ranchers, farmers, whitewater raft guides, and travelers, paying close attention to the relationships between men, women, and families. The 2011 summer season performances complement Centrum’s weeklong workshops in each genre, where participants and faculty from across the country and around the world come together to provide mentorship, and create artistic community. Applications are still being accepted for weeklong workshops for Voice Works, Fiddle Tunes, Jazz, the Writers' Conference, and Acoustic Blues. The program opens with Schubert’s Overture to Rosamunde, and concludes with Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” The performance is the second-to-last for Maestro Schwarz after 26 years on the podium - his final concert as music director takes place the following evening at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. A heralded champion of American music with nearly 300 recordings to his credit, Schwarz ranks among the most prolific of American conductors. The Symphony has named Schwarz conductor laureate beginning next season. The Seattle Symphony performance celebrates the life and legacy of Centrum Founding Director Joseph F. Wheeler, who passed away in November 2009. A classical clarinetist and former band instructor, Wheeler brought the Symphony to Port Townsend as part of Centrum’s summer offerings - first at Centrum’s original performance facility, the Mule Barn tent, and later at the christening of McCurdy Pavilion in 1992. A free concert preview of the symphony program, including a piano demonstration and discussion of the works, is presented by Centrum’s Artistic Director for Chamber Music Lucinda Carver at Wheeler Theater on Thursday, June 16, 7 PM. The Seattle Symphony performance is made possible, in part, by the Richard and Anne Schneider Director’s Creative Fund. The July 4 evening concert, “Fiddles and Fireworks,” begins at 7 PM in McCurdy Pavilion.
